Well, after feeling kinda sh*tty and depressed, I thought I'd try on some music to help me out. This album, the new U2 album "No Line on the Horizon", actually hasn't come out yet, but can be found on most of your file-sharing outlets. It was also (accidentally??) put up on Napster (pay service) last week, and Wal-Mart (accidentally x 2?) put up preview clips of the whole album.
ANYHOW...lets get on here...with the MUSIC!!I've only had the album for about 3 days. I always test out new albums in my car stereo because it is an excellent system, and I like the landscape + people + music aspect of it all. I've tried picking a fav off the album. Well, first off, this is nothing like the past few u2 albums. This album is a bit more darker, with a fair more electronica/industrial (like Achtung Baby) but more modern. This takes a LOT of listens to sink in. And it doesn't *stick* to you the way songs like *Beautiful Day* or *Sometimes you can't make it on your own..* do. But, they challenge, command the listener to examine what is going on. And there IS still the U2 depth and passion.
My fave's..
Well..this is tough, again...but "Unknown Caller"
is very, very melodic, with a chorus of like a choir chant. The lyrics...I had read they are about that single second between life and death. Ahhh...such casual topics, eh?Another....Cedars of Lebanon. Basically, Bono does a rough voice almost 'skat' about a moment of life in Palestine. He doesn't blame or preach. He just describes the utter poverty, lack of clean water and food, filth, hopelessness, and pain all around him.
Yet another....Fez -Being Born. I didn't realize this was named after where they partly wrote the new album, in Morocco. To my imagination, it has something to do with the 'birth', or 'creation' of this album. Musically, this has to be one of the most experimental U2 songs ever made!
I will leave the rest up to you. Anybody want a copy, just email me. :)
Best,
Jay

Hi Jay,
I don't know what it is with me lately. I just have NO interest in listening to music. Even music that I like & have always enjoyed listening to.
I don't know why! I wonder if anyone else has experienced this.

I'm a big U2 fan. I own nearly all of their CDs (never could bring myself to buy Pop) and have seen them several times over the years going back to 1983. (Yeah, I'm that old...lol.)
Having provided that background info, I've listened to the new CD once. I'll have to give my review later, as you're right about it taking multiple listenings before it sinks in. I will say that I *think* I'll like it based on the first listen. And I'll add that I'm apparently one of the few who likes "Get On Your Boots", based on other opinions I've heard and read.
BTW for anyone who wants a free (and legal) way to check it out, it's streaming at their myspace page (www.myspace.com/u2). If I remember correctly, it's also streaming at u2.com as well.

Yes, listen to the streaming versions, which you can easily record with all of the software out there if you want to. But, like I am doing,(and I am positive DG is doing) buy it!! I will be there the day it hits the shelves, and there will be nothing like listening to all of the wonderfully original (vs. crappy internet) versions of the songs. Plus you get the booklet and all.

Hi Jay,
U2 is my favorite band! But I like all of their CDs...every single one but not every single song...which ones don't you like? I haven't heard the new one yet, except that one song they play on the radio. Heard it twice, but not enough for opionion. But it's interesting you said it's musically "experimental". Maybe I'll just wait and see and buy the CD. I still like to have the hard CDs in my collection, although I've ignored that for many years. Just buy two or three a year.
But how do you transfer songs on an IPod? My IPOd has been ignored because songs are $1 each, and I can't pay that very often. Are there places you can subscribe monthly for unlimited downloads, so that I could subscribe for a month or two and download like crazy? I am way out of the loop when it comes to media formats. My son and I used to get all our songs from BearShare, which would all play on my computer, but I think there is now code attached to all the songs (or the software blocks songs without the code) that disallow the applications to play them, because I can only retrieve less than 1/2 of my library... grrrrr....But can't put any of them in my IPOD...So I want them all in my IPod, and they don't transfer over. Any ideas??? Thanks!!

Kath, I hear ya...The same thing happened to me when I took xxRIs..and I mentioned this in my posts already, but as soon as I quit taking them, I started enjoying music again! I used Music as a coping mechanism as a child when I was trapped in my bedroom all the time...can't live without it..and it was very dissappointing when I lost interest in it; I didn't enjoy it while medicated the last few times....I totally understand. Kath, how long have you felt this way? Are you taking meds (sorry if you've already said)?
Do you think your situation with music could also fall into that side effect of depression we hear all the time "loss of enjoyment in activities"?..or something like that.
Are there other things you don't enjoy as much anymore?

Ya, I know Kath....sometimes you just feel "numb" and music is like 'overstimulation'...for me, anyhow.
Take good care..okay?
Jay :)

Thanks Garnet. I cried when I watched it. The kind of crying that comes up from ones throat.
You are really sweet & thank you. I created a 'shortcut' for that video. When I need to get in touch with the magic in life & with hope I'll watch it.
love, Kath

I've had success in converting media formats by burning the music onto a audio CD and then using windows media player to rip the CD tracks back to your computer as an MP3 format. MP3 format will play on an IPOD.
Try that.
Seldom.

Seldomseen--thanks for that idea. I tried the rip burn thing years ago, but my D drive had trouble reading the CDs, and I ended up with a whole pile of ruined CDSs- the Rs mixed in with the R/Ws and the piles of blank CDs-out of frustration. My desktop is old though.
I also tried it a year ago, and all my downloads from the site I used were coded to prevent them from being burned. I don't know which ones are the good sites anymore, and 1/2 my library has just 'disappeared'. Not lost in my hard drive, but the songs were somehow invalid (forget the word).
I also have a laptop now and haven't thought of doing that since I've had it, and will give that a try again. Thanks for the tip :) I'm getting sick of not having new music saved and having to rely on youtube, although my car's player doesn't read MP3s anyway. I've been listening to the exact same songs in my IPOD over and over and over...it contradicts my motivation to getting back to working out regularly again :(
I think I'll do the rip burn thing with the new U2 CD and see how that works.

Hi!It can be related to depression...I feel the same since a while...I'm normally a lot into music, especially progressive music from the 70's (Genesis, yes, Gentle Giant, Pink Floyd, Gong...) and also a lot into the 80's new wave as well as neo-prog like (IQ, Marillion...to name a few) and of course everything who include metal...Speed metal (Kreator, Exodus, Sepultura, Slayer, Voivod)...more commercial metal and the list goes on...
Before, when I was putting a record that I liked a lot, I had this strange sensation of pins and needles on the head...you know this i'm sure...now, I can barely listen to music without having headache...I really don't appreciate it as before...and it's related to my depression and the lost of interest I have in everything...Someday, I don,t know why, I put on old LP of Marillion and I listen to a song like Withe Russian from the Clutching at straw album (1987) and I can feel the hair sensation...and i'm still in depression...so I wonder if it's really related to this...but well...that can be a part of the answer...
Ho and I also don't seem to enjoy newer stuff as well as before... NEw albums come out and I found them very ordinary...before, buying a new LP or CD was a kinf of experience...putting my headphone and listen to the music and watching the cover and read the lyrics...now that's seem to be just boring...I donwload the new CD...listen to it faster...if it,s good I make a copy for my car...and I just listen to it in my car...if it's very good, it goes in my ipod...but that's rare... before I was always fall asleep with my headphone in my head...now I can't do it...music keep me awake...strange...

Yes, I think it was depressions for sure. I wasn't enjoying much of ANYthing...
I am much better now. Am really enjoying my 7 orchid plants, which are all blooming. Before, I was just lukewarm about them.
I'm enjoying making LOTS of pottery for the upcoming GUild sale in May.
I'm much better. Hugs, Kath

I haven't heard of Gentle Giant for so long, like 30 years.
This has always been a favourite of mine......

> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDmhP6YiN6sHey you!!! lol This is Van Der Graaf Generator!!! One of my favorite band of the 70's... Peter Hammil was at the time my favorite songwriter... the music was not top notch , especially live...but they was good enought...I prefer the second generation...the first 1968-1972....Second 1975-1977, Third 1978, they change their name for Van Der Graaf...they lost the "generator" for this last album in the 70's... But you know, Van der Graaf Generator is still an active band, they do a VERY GREAT album last yeat...it's call Trisector... and all the elements of the old group is still their, except for the saxophone...David Jackson, who is the original saxophone and flute player of the band since the 60's, don't participated on that new one... Too bad...because all the older elements was their...Organs...Strong lyrics...
I always find it funny to heard people told they doesnt like progressive music, telling it was over rated, pompous... Remember yes group with Topographic ocean double album??? OR Genesis - The Lamb lies down on broadway album... People was complanning it was overlong and overrated...but it was not the case... the truth is more than 35 years later, we talk about it again ... and they still continue to sell tons of CD's of these albums...
Peter Hammil was one of the first guy who begin to talk and write about the "punk" mouvement and definite the word and it's conception. In 74 with his " Nadir's Big Chance" solo album especially, it was a smooth album but very powerfull for the lyrics.... Funny...a lot of punk groups at the time often hated Pink Floyd but liked Van der Graaf Generator...just because the guy (Peter Hammil) was more a rebel one , but a rebel with high class...anyway ...out of subject! lol
I prefer Genesis... Peter Gabriel was THE MOST BRILLANT guy in the 70's...before in turn out to be a too much world music artist... forget me...I don't like this at all...

I recently relistened to "Selling England by the Pound" and was surprised by how experimental it sounded.
You would know Carpet Crawlers, I think. I once heard it while asleep and it came into my dream and was really lovely.
This is the end of the thread.
