and why is he suing us?
my sister got a fed ex this morning saying she and my husband are going to be sued (we have a pretty good reason why too! an overly friendly old man with whom we wrecked his car and have yet to fix it. ooopsie. well, if we were goign to e fixing vehicles left and right, we'd fix hers first, right?)
this is ridiculuous, as if she was on tv,she'd do nothing but cry all the time. if my husband were on this show, he'd do nothing but mention the fact that this man fondles my sister every chance he gets.
this court tv stuff. wowsa, i never would have thought anyone i knew would do this! anyone here have any experience with this? you can decline, right?
and jsut which one is judje mathis? i don't get into the whole court tv thing anyway. i know judge judy. i remember people's court with judge wapner or whatever his name was, but that's about it. do you win any money. (remember folks, i do live in indiana, this is jerry springer territory. we're very lucky the fed ex wasn't from jerry springer saying we could wrastle this out on tv with butter and jello!)

TV courts aren't the "real" legal system, so you can definitely decline and I'd suggest that you do. If he wants to sue you, make him do it for real and pay for a lawyer, etc. He's probably trying something like this first just to see if you'll cave.

I always thought that they were real!! Otherwise, how would they get the people being sued to appear on the show? And things like that. I'd take the letter seriously through - perhaps you could get some legal person to look over it?
Kind regards
Meri
PS I have no idea about the American legal system, so um, factor that into my post!

Hi KK,
Judge Greg Mathis's show is called *Judge Mathis.* It's the same idea of shows like *The People's Court* or *Judge Judy.* The cases are real litigant claims and the judge's decision is called binding arbitration, in other words, it's a valid decision. I don't know if the show pays the penalties or the transportation or accomodations for the litigants for that matter. If I were you I'd carefully read what it says in the notice.

Hi Phillipa,
I would assume you can refuse to be on the show, I wouldn't think it's like a real court other than that the judge's verdict is valid: binding arbitration.

I'm glad Poet spoke up because I wasn't clear at all. I think this might put all the ideas together. IF you choose to go the Judge Mathis route, it's probably binding arbitration and, if it is, you are legally bound by the decision....because you submitted yourself to that process. If you choose NOT to go, however, this is not like a real law suit; a judgment cannot be made against you in your absence....not a binding one, at least.
Does that sound right? I'm pretty sure it is.

I know nothing about it, but that certainly sounds right.
