Any sci-fi watchers here?
I'm a fan of sci-fi--good extraterrestrial/planets/aliens/technology type sci-fi. It's one of my favorite entertainment genre.
Battlestar Gallactica looks like it might be pretty good.

My husband watched it all last season, and looked forward to the premiere this season. I've watched a few episodes with him. I love Mary Mcdonnell (sp?) and Edward James Olmos. It's very very hard for me to see Starbuck as a woman, though. I remember the original too much. And seeing Richard Hatch playing someone else. Too weird. Plus, it's often this strange bluish gray color in all the scenes. It's supposed to be kind of grim, but it's icky.
Still, he likes it. He also watches very very bad Sci-Fi movies and such. But I think he looks at this one as good, not laughably bad.

I could have sworn I asked if anyone here watches Battlestar Gallactica.
I can't find my post. Did the Cylons zap my post? Do they know I've been hiding out on an outpost of humanity far off in the darkness of cyberspace called Planet Pbabble?
So does anyone else know about the thread to humanity posed by these creatures?
Isn't there anyone out there who likes SciFi? This looks like it's going to be an amazing series-- if it holds up and doesn't lose its mind.
I hope so. I love good SciFi.

I thought you were referring to the old Battlestar Gallactica show of which I only have the vaguest of memories sort of blended with buck rogers...
hmmmm.........something about spandex in the future?

This is the new, revamped, cult favorite BG. It's really grisly, though-- very contemporary-political-despair-ish. Bleak, down-beat.
About the Cylons, computer/machines who were created by Man, but who rebelled against their oppressors (man), and then, defeated in battle, retreated into the depths of the Universe.
Now they have returned to confront their former creators.
Goes downhill from there. In the premiere of the third season, ,many of the lead characters, who had been held in a Cylon prison camp, on the Planet, Caprica--which is ruled by a Vichy-like government, lead by the former chief scientist who initially betrayed the humans--are taken out in a truck convoy, to be summarily executed on a lonely road, as an example to the Resistance, and any other humans who do not accept the Cylon God.
Ends with the sound of the machine guns, that are attached to the appendages of the more brutal=looking "toasters" (as humans call them), resonating in the distance.
It is harrowing. But good. Extremely well done, although I haven't quite been able to watch it all.

I should add that many of the cylons look like people. Except there are copies. There's a Six, an Eight(s), and others. The copies look like one another, and tend to have similar attitudes and emotional ranges, and philosophical approaches, but they aren't identical. I guess they're more like clones-- different experiences with pretty much the same genetic makeup. Some of them like and identify with, and even become protectors of/members of the human race (Sharon), others hate/ or distrust humanity. Others simply want domination.
Some fall in love with humans. The Cylons mostly lack the ability to fall in love-- although they want to, sort of-- but also see it as a source of weakness and unreliability--but some like Sharon, and one of the sixes, and a male Cylon who's in love with Starbuck, one of the battlefleet's top guns, an alpha female, do.
The early models of Cylons look like Robocop, except more massive, and ungainly-- more clunky.
In the US, it's on SciFi channel, Friday nights, is anyone wants to see it.

thanks, gg. I was paging up and down like mad last night.
guess this has been a very active board. Wish I could drum up some interest in BG.
oh well. Guess I'll have to find one of the scifi fan boards, if I want to bewail the fate of humanity with someone of similar vantage point.

Oh, Great! I can talk more about it.
Yeah, it is a kind of weird bluish gray-- guess it's supposed to represent the metallic horror of the future,
Mary McDonnell (?) is really good-- but so many of them are-- I like Grace Park-- the Cylon who wants to be human. And of course Ed.J. Olmos.
Even the guy who plays Gaius Baltar-- has this creepy fascination--
yeah-- a lot of gorgeous people who are really good actors, and are just sublime in their utter apocalyptic torment. Sort of Gray's Anatomy loses the hospital and finds the outer reaches of the known Universe, with lots of visionary gloom--but the people, although more burdened by fate, and ravaged by suffering, are, if anything, more gorgeous.
I never watched the original, so I can't compare. I love sci-fi-- I liked "Firefly" on tv although didn't see the movie-- really amusing-- and the beginning of "Farscape" wasn't bad-- although it got sooooo stupid at the end.
Snoozing did you--or gg your husband-- ever watch that weird late-late-night one, called "Lexx"? that was also good (IMO, anyway)-- the ending however weird was really sort of sad.
bwaaahhaahhaa. I've always wanted to talk to someone about this. My SigO won't watch these with me.

I tried to watch it, but wasn't able to get into it. But I haven't been able to get into *Lost*, either, which I hear is a fantastic show, too.I grew up reading science fiction and loved it....starting with old stuff like Ray Bradbury. But I haven't gotten into a lot of the shows. I liked Star Trek Next Generation, but that's about it.
I liked a lot of them as a kid. Logan's Run, the original BG, Space 1999, even Buck Rogers. But as an adult, I need something a little more mind-stimulating -- isn't that the whole attraction behind *science* fiction? :D So yeah, I'm addicted to the new Battlestar Galactica. Not heavy at all on science, but really good at subtleties of human character. Nobody is *all good* or *all bad.*

Jost,
My husband is currently on a battlestar galactica (series) DVD binge. He's totally obsessed.
Good news-- he's nowhere near DSM criteria for any mental disorder. He just likes to watch a good story.
If you enjoy it-- indulge! No calories, No risks to your health (other than sleeplessness!) what a panacea :)
Personally, I will be watching Desperate Housewives tonight. It's my indulgence. Sinful, decadent, saucy!
I'm addicted :)
