How do you get thru the everyday slog?

Posted by fi on April 24, 2006, at 14:37:01

This feels a bit like joining in at a party where everyone else is chatting..

I've not got serious depression at the moment. I am just at a stage when I'm not interested in things, and getting through the everyday things like eating, doing work seems hard work. I seem to have got out of just doing things without thinking about it as a regular routine eg shopping, cleaning, washing and ironing. I've also stopped opening most of my letters.

So I suppose its really about getting myself into doing things as a routine again. And getting myself thru the everyday stuff.

Any suggestions/tips would be great.

You know, that sounds like depression to me. Maybe not severe, but still depression.

And I have no idea what to tell you about getting out of it because I am the same way. If my best friend came to the door, I wouldn't answer - my house looks WAY too bad. I think just about every dish I own is dirty. And I haven't showered today because I'm not going to see anyone, so what's the point.

I do have work I need to get done and that's been hard too. Right now, I'm just trying to do 15 minutes at a time. If I can do that long, I'll let myself do whatever until I feel like I can manage 15 more minutes. Do you think you could do that? Just 15 mintues (or 10 or 5 or whatever you can) of one of those things on your list of things do do.

I just find that telling myself I must *finish* something makes it too overwhelming. So, 15 minutes, it is. *That* I can do....sometimes.

Sometimes (very often) I feel like there is so much stuff to do that it feels overwhelming. I might make a list of "chores" or something to do, which makes it worse I think. Then of all things, I'll keep adding stuff to it! I try to keep my lists as short as possible, or don't make them at all. I know what needs to get done.

Sometimes when I am in a DEPRESSED state, I just throw them away. I can always make a new one later. I'll turn the TV off, plug the iPOD into the stereo and purposely pace around the house listening to music until I finally feel like doing something more productive, like the dishes, after I have walked past them a dozen times. That usually gets my mind rolling into doing something else, like some laundry.

Other times when I am in a more MANIC state, I can't put the list down and keep busy. This is just part of my personality cycle that I have to accept. I guess it all averages out in the end.

I once was a part of a therphy group that said do just one thing a day. This relieved the pressure of being a super being. And this lead to doing more . Love Phillipa

jammerlich, curtm and phillipa:

That's been great- a mixture of wise suggestions and knowing its not just me! It can feel like an awful secret. Which is silly really, as I wouldnt think that of someone else in this position.

An (optional) list and regular little chunks are a good way forward- I opened a few letters today!

And particularly not feeling I'm some mixture of being lazy and a freak.

Hello, sorry I'm abit late on this tread, but I wanted to add what I read somewhere on this site:

Some days you just are meant to get through (to get to the good ones).

Or something like that.

Well it helps me anyway.

Hi Meri

Spooky- I just replied to your post about horrible UK (officially) spring weather!!

No post is ever late, as far as I remember (joining again after years).

That is a very good thought to use- not trying to achieve anything amazing, but just to get thru.

Thanks (or should I say ta!)

Another important thing I do to get through the slog is to visit my new friends here! We understand each other, whereas the average Joe cannot comprehend any of what we go through.
