Has anyone else ever felt like this?

Posted by TamaraJ on May 28, 2005, at 20:08:22

I am a little embarrassed to be starting yet another thread, and I'm sorry to be taking up so much space on Social with my posts. Last one for a while, I promise. Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone else has ever felt like this. It's very weird, but every song I hear on the radio is making me feel melancholic and kinda weepy and empty (even the fun, upbeat old ones), and the feeling just won't go away. With the exception of about 3 or 4 weeks ago and now, I only ever felt like this once or twice before in my life really, and that was after something really bad had happened to me. Usually, listening to music makes me feel good on even the worst days. But, yesterday and today - completely different story. It's a freaky, unnerving feeling. I've tried changing the station, but it doesn't help. Tried turning off the radio, but the quiet is eerie. And, maybe it isn't the music at all. I don't know really. I am sure this will pass, but I just wanted to know if others have ever experienced a similar feeling, even if it is not triggered by listening to music.

I have a tendency to keep these things to myself, but thought I would take a chance here to see if anyone else can relate and, if so, what they did about it.

We don't have enough threads as it is. And in my personal opinion, you're welcome to as much space as you desire.

Is there any chance there is something seasonal about your feelings? They change the playlists at the radio stations to match the seasons.

I tend to seek out people I care about. Even a phone call. I need to hang with people. It usually sets me right again.

Tamara,
As Lar said, there aren't enough posts on the board as it is. Besides, most of your posts are fun and entertaining - the kind that bring people away from their problems for a little while. Even when people post about things that they are going through, it helps others to see that they're not alone. I also have been experiencing sadness listening to music and watching TV or movies. There is often something in the words or the situation in the story that touches on something sad for me - either something missing in my life or a reminder of something sad I've experienced in the past. Sometimes they just remind me of happier times when I had more hope. Well, I'd better stop before I make you worse. Anyway, there's a reason they call it melancholia!

There are still times I am able to enjoy music a bit though, like today on my walk. Yet there is a bittersweet quality to it even then.

I'm sorry you're experiencing this too.

Kara

i absolutely know what you mean. Sometimes the songs are too happy and sometimes they are too sad. On those days i just turn them off altogether.

-- I thought of that, but the feelings kinda creep up on me, when I least expect them, and the time of year has had nothing to do with it, from what I can tell anyway. But, it has been quite rainy the past number of days in Ontario, where I live, so that could have something to do with it. Yet, it was really sunny and nice yesterday. I have been listening to music all morning today, and it hasn't been as bad. So, it may be just one of those weird, unexplainable things.

-- I am weird. I will call friends, but tend to make sure the conversation is about them. That's always the best for me. I learned at a young age that nobody wanted to hear about my problems or insecurities. Anything I was experiencing or troubled about was insignificant, trivial and just plain silly. I will get through, I always do, and I will have a smile on my face again very soon I am sure.

Thanks, Larry.

Hugs to you,

Tamara

-- Thanks, Kara, you are so nice. I'm sorry you are experiencing it too, although it is nice to know I am not alone with these feelings. Music has always been the one thing I could count on, and when it makes me sad, it is almost unbearable. But, today the music is on, and it isn't as bad. Phew!!!! I think you are right that music takes us back to other times - some happy, some sad, some good, some bad - and perhaps we subconsciously mourn the loss of innocence and good times and regret mistakes made, missed opportunity, bad decisions, misspent years and the things we didn't do as well as we could have (if that makes any sense at all).

I'm glad you were able to enjoy music on your walk yesterday.

Take care, and have a good day today.

Yes, and its weird, isn't it. I mean, how can a happy song make you sad. UGH! But, it happens and when it does, it is a drag. I finally did turn the radio off and flicked on the t.v. just for the background noise. That helped.

~~again, i can relate to this too. I do the same thing~~

I feel this way I think, a bit, when I have bad PMS. At those times I don't even need a song to trigger sadness. Sometimes it just wells up in me. Is that a possibility for you?

Sure I can relate to that, sometimes music brings up a lot, too much, sometimes it's a great friend. It is certainly a reminder. There are some songs I simply can't tolerate. They aren't bad songs, they just remind me of bad times.
You start all the threads you want, OK? I need some good reading. I can't think of much to say right now, but I am paying attention/reading.

Thanks, sleepygirl. Music is definitely a reminder. Sometimes an old song comes on and I find myself sitting there with a stupid grin on my face because I am remembering something, from long the past, that still makes me smile. Weird how music can evoke such strong emotions. I know what you mean about some songs that can't be tolerated - some because they are just, well, bad, but others because they bring back too many memories, usually painful. I remember when we'd move, for some reason I would associate the move with a song or two (song(s) that my friends and I loved and listened to a lot). Once we got to the new place, I could not listen to those songs without crying. It would sometimes be years before I can stand to listen to the song(s)).

You take care.

Tamara

Hi JenStar,

I think that may have been part of it. I had also just started a new AD, so maybe that caused some of it as well. It has been better the past few days, which has been a relief.

Take care.
