Becoming a picky eater

Posted by NikkiT2 on April 27, 2005, at 12:34:12

I've always had pride in the fact that I'm not a fussy or picky eater. I was bought up to try everything, and if I didn't like something, it was dished up regularly till I learnt to like it!

mashed potato and sausages have been my only real dislikes..

until now..

This stupid stomach thing has caused me to become a really fussy eater.. And my husband is getting really angry over this. We take it in turns to cook.. I cook one week, he cooks the next.. But all I fancy is "comfort food".. Tonight he has bought a tomato quiche (eurgh), and a pasta pesto salad.. I can't think of anything I fancy less int he world right now. Pesto suddenly makes me retch (seems really bitter and I can't handle bitter stuff), and the tomatoes in the quiche all slimy..

I hate this, as, like I said, I have never been a fussy eater. And the husband only has a selected collection of things he cooks *l* Either I give up the stuff I know how to cook without thinking so he can do those, or I put up with hardly eating on the week he cooks..

Grrrrr!!! Anyone got any DEAD easy vegetarian recipes for me?? *L*

I lived on bread last week. Sometimes I cooked for my husband and son, sometimes they went out.

I'm sorry he isn't more understanding that it's not something you can help. :(

When I was pregnant, we ate the same thing - or rather I did - almost every day. Which meant a nice salad of cantaloupe, honeydew, grapes, pineapple, bananas, and whatever else appealed for dinner.

You know, this as led me to thinking on this a little more..

And I am craving carbs.. craving them BIG style.. just like I did when I was on zyprexa. All I want to eat is stodgy, carb laden food.. Not sweets or puddings.. but simple pasta dishes, cheese and potato pie.. even mashed potato - as I said earlier I've always hated that.

And no, I'm not pregnant..

Its just really freaky!

I had insomnia, anxiety, and nausea from Sept 03 to Dec 04 (15 months) and cooking was such a chore. Especially cutting meat. I even hated shopping for meat. (It still makes my stomach turn sometimes to be in the meat department.)

Here's a web site and I'll Babblemail you something, if I can find any of my recipes on my computer.

Hmm.
I'm vegetarian and into carbs as well.
So.
What do I eat???

I love stir-frys.
Onion and garlic and
Fresh vegetables (whatever you like). Brocolli and Carrot and Beans and Mushrooms and Capsicum (red or orange or yellow sweet pepper)
A little soya sauce and woster sauce (however ya spell that) and sweet chili sauce and sundried tomatos.
And there are these baked noodles you can get that are crunchy. They are good for snacking (instead of potato chips) and you can mix them through a stir fry at the end.

I also LOVE pasta. Especially fresh pasta. Fetachini (and I just know that is spelt wrong!)
You can get these packeted sauces that are pretty good. Some are just dreadful (IMO) but I found one or two that are pretty good. And they come in single serves and take just 20 seconds in the microwave. Then cheese on top. I'm keen on that and it takes me about 3-5 minutes to cook the pasta :-)

Maybe your body is just telling you what you need right now. Veggies are a lot harder on the gut than carbs are. Maybe you need time to heal a bit.

hi Nikki,
I'm sorry your stomach is bothering you! I think Dinah's right - carbs ARE easier on the stomach. I think that's why docs recommend avoiding dairy/veggies when you're recovering from a flu or food poisoning episode.

Why does it make your hubby mad that you need to eat gentler foods? I'm sorry he's mad. :(

Would it be possible that you and your hubby start cooking two dishes instead of one? Maybe a carby thing for you, and something else for him? There are also lots of pre-packaged meals available that either of you might like (some are gross, but you might find something you like.) How about sandwiches? Omelettes? I know that the health-food stores like Whole Foods sometimes have really cool vegetarian stuff, both fresh and pre-packaged.

Good luck to you. I hope your tummy feels better soon!

one more idea » NikkiT2

here is one more idea that worked for me and my husband:

Well, I do all the cooking (I love it, he hates it, it just works out that way.) But when we're both trying to eat healthy, we actually do menu planning. We sit down for 10 minutes and discuss what we want to eat the upcoming week. for example, we'll decide to have turkey chili on Monday + leftovers on Tuesday; chicken breast & asparagus on Wed; etc. If one of us craves a certain dish we can plan it in.

Now we're not always this organized! But maybe the planning portion could work for you & hubby. If you sit down together and talk about what hurts your stomach and what is OK, it might be easier for you both to make food choices for the week.

good luck!

How about potato soup? (Well, it's actually Krumple Leves, but whose counting?)

Peel and cube about four potatoes, pop 'em into a pot with water to cover, add a boullion cube (or stock, if you have it on hand), hot paprika to taste, and a finely chopped onion. Boil until potatoes are tender, then lower the heat and add a tiny bit of flour to thicken. Then, when it's as thick as you like it, add about half a pint of sour cream. Or, if you're in the Commonwealth, add about 225g sour cream...)

Knorr Swiss makes the best boullion cubes, and this soup is the best thing in the world on cold, wet nights when served with a nice salad and a warm loaf of sourdough bread with butter.

Well, that's my comfort food! You can also add peas, capsicum, I guess you could add chopped tomato -- my mother probably would *l* -- or some other thing that I haven't ever thought of.

I hope your tummy gets better soonest! xoxo

My fettuccini recipe is a real comfort food for me - and it's easy

Use a mixer and mix together 8 ounces of cream cheese and 1/4 cup of butter. Add in a fair amount of basil and some black pepper.

Meanwhile melt another 1/4 cup of butter with a liberal amount of garlic.

Cook the fettuccini. When it's done, toss it with the melted butter. Beat in 2/3 cup boiling water to the cream cheese mixture and pour it on top of the pasta. Add parmesan to taste (I put in a lot) and toss it all together.

I like to use a mix of regular and spinach fettuccini - otherwise it just looks bland.
