Like an egg I'm afraid, RBB. After all, they are only machines. They just seem to be alive sometimes.

We blew all our internal components on our PC christmas day before last!!
What happened was there was a spike in our power supply that caused it.. What you need to do to prevent that is buy a UPS (uninteruptable power supply).. that "smooths" the power and prevents this kind of thing happening.. they're not expensive, and I think ALL computers should be connected to one!!
Now all that our pc's are connected via one, we never turn our computers off.. but if you're on broadband, just via a broadband modem, I wouldn't suggest that.. if you want to do that, you need to get a broadband router with a built in fire wall (around $50 probably).. that prevents hackers being able to get inw hile yo'renot around!

Thanks

Nope, it just suddenly "blew".. couldn't even turn it on..
If your PC is making funny sounds, your fans are probably getting dirty. You'll need a can of "compressed air".. they come with a long nozzle.. then take the top / side of the main PC unit (unless its a laptop), and give all the fans a good squirt to get rid of the crud on it, and have a good spray around all the components too. The larger fans you can gently use a small brush on.. but the smaller ones I wouldn't do that.. just squirt well!!
If its a laptop, find the fans on the side / bottom and give them a damned good squirt too! I do this every couple of weeks to prevent a bad built up of dirt.. You'll be amazed how much dust and fluff is in there!!!When going out to buy a router, take along the name of your ISP.. If you're on a cable internet connection, you'll need a different type (a non-modem router which are cheaper).. otherwise you need one with integral modem. I'd NEVER reccomend anyone connect to internet (if they're using broadband) without a router.
I love having a router.. means when I borrow a laptop from work, I can just plug a network cable into the laptop to the router and ta da! Connected to internet!!!Good luck!

I began noticing a strange smell like burning plastic for several weeks with my computer at work. Then one day, it just didn't come on. Hardrive fried. Go figure.
Second one to do that to me at work. Interestingly they were the same make and same model.Lovely Gateways.

Watch out for excessive "grinding sounds" when you boot it up. This seems to be a sign to me that there is something going on down there that shouldn't be.
For the Love of God, BACKUP everything you don't want to lose.
E-mail addresses are hard for me, I don't know how to back them up.
But back up data, ALL data, even jpeg files, etc. Be sure you know where your software is, in case you have to reload it.
When I lost my last computer at work, I hadn't backed up my picture files in a while (I do amature marketing) Anyway, I lost some ad slicks that I had done as well as loads of pictures I had taken of our product and they were my only copy. BAD BAD BAD move not to back up.
I also lost some forms I had created. I am the Form Queen at work and I had created tons of spreadsheets, forms, etc. And since it had been a few months since I have backed them up, I lost many of those as well.
I know better, and I always back up my data (had to recreate a whole quarter of data once, not fun), but never dreamed of constantly backing up my other files.......But you should.Just remember,
BACKUP CONSTANTLY
DEFRAG OFTEN
REBOOT PROPERLYAND
Always use a virus protection program. A spam blocker is also good, and any kind of firewall with the internet is a must. However, this will not help you if your hard drive is going bad. That I don't think you can prevent. SOmetimes they can be cleaned and re formatted and work okay, but my experience has been that once they begin to have problems, they continue to have problems.
I'm no expert by any means, what I know, I know from experience.
Anyway, yes a good cleaning would help, internally and externally.

Thanks,
I will do that. The last thing I need is to lose my computer omg! I have no idea how to defrag, so thats prolly a bad sign right there lol. But I will go see if I can figure it out.

I'm a little fearful giving compliments that migjht be taken the wrong way. You know, like when you tell your wife, "You look thin in that dress." Which is invariably followed by, "So, you think I'm fat!" Well, I'm seeing a whole different side of you Grace. Not that I didn't like the other sides or anything. Oh, jeez. Anyway, I like it.

Meaning besides the "I wanna get laid by strangers" side, and "I'm a sarcastic middle aged woman searching for her soul" side, I actually have a "I know a little bit about a lot of things" side.......?????????/
Small smile this morning after a humiliating weekend of giving and not getting........

Who sings that?
