It's been four years since I left job as insurance transcriber due to mental and physical health failure. Tried two more jobs. One, they let me go because was not remembering handbook teaching (not given time for on-job learning). Second, let go for tremors in my hands (prob' so many meds too many yrs).
That was when I filed for SSD. I receive $837. I could get by if absolutely nothing changed ... well things do of course. I am $40 over poverty level so not entitled to state benefits.
Due to changes, I've advanced half my check prior to its arrival, for too many months now. I must find the courage to supplement my income.
I cannot overwork at keyboard as have three disc extrusions. Cannot lift over 35 lbs. Cannot work 8 hrs due to easy fatigue.
Tonight someone showed me love (giving w/o expectation). It has inspired me more than anything I can recall in years. Even in inspiration, deathly afraid of rejection.
Job needs be flexible, PT, accepting of my behavioral health problem????? Any ideas anyone? cf

Can you tutor? In my area, we have a newpaper just for ads. Everytime I've put an ad offering my services as a tutor, I get calls. Even one student might help you enough to get by.

I excelled in English, but currently have developed my own style?!
What once was not-an-error spelling and standup-in-court proofreading and writing structure has faded. I question whether effect or affect is proper, and if ? or ) goes at sentence end.
In 2000, before I left my insurance transcription job, my head was held and the back of it bashed into a hard surface multiple times. Never had a scan. Wonder rec'd damage. Asked PCP re: MRI scan, but he writes it off, kind of like I shouldn't have done after it occurred.
I developed no other particular studies or talents.
Really a great idea tho' MKB, tks cf

I don't have practical advice on how you might be able to earn extra money. I do after hours typing but you said that isn't possible.
I did want to say that your move to want to make it on your own and your willingness to try things suited to your health is a very courageous move. I wish you strength and luck.

I work 10 hours a week at my local (very small!!) library. The duties are varied, the atmosphere is fairly laid back. The pay is bad enough that I don't lose my SSDI... 8^)

What about helping to tutor English as a second language? English learners won't be as concerned with affect or effect or punctuation, and as a speaker of English you are qualified. Most places that facilitate such things will provide training and materials. Or you can put a tutor ad in just as a 'conversation partner' for english language learners - some people who are new to the country don't really have anyone to talk to to improve their language skills because they haven't made many friends yet outside their own cultural group/family. To do conversational tutoring you really just have to talk to the person, and you can set your own hours, even work from home. Try advertising at your nearest University, where there are lots of out-of-country students.
Another option is tutoring elementary or junior high school kids. You don't need much training or anything like that.

Whoa Nellie ... what a great idea sprung from the seed of another. I could do that!
I live walking blocks away from huge university, and in condominium community full of students. My daughter teaches junior high school. I could target both.
Attended the university, so know posting spots.
I did not graduate ... phooey, married instead; but, maybe could show 1-1/2 to 2 year credits, if necessary.
May p/u a secretarial-type, proper punctuation book, and new dictionary. Maybe that's all I need as a refresher for self also; could all come flooding back.
I know a few people at the university who could direct me to the tutorial program; prob' is one. Daughter could post me at junior high school.
Tks so very much ... you deserve to catch a rest! cf

I have tutored for several years - students from first grade through graduate school, including ESL. If anyone wants some tips on how to get started, let me know. It helps that I'm a certified teacher, but it wouldn't be necessary in all cases.

I'll keep your post, because I'd like some tips when get the 'ego strength' to take this on. I started 'defeatest thinking' the next day. I'm monitoring my emotions daily for DBT (dialectical behavioral therapy) and now my 'toilet activity' daily for physical probs'. I am going to appts. constantly and have little time to, be free. I'm pouting for that reason and because I was told, no more coffee, pepsi, or chocolate!!! Living is so, what's the word ? .. 'extra-challenging' (not a word) w/ mental and physical health problems. I'm thankful for your encouragement. A seed has been planted! cf

That sounds great. I've always felt would enjoy working in a library, but often told 'needed degree' to get a foot in one! tks cf
