delusion

Posted by dondon on March 14, 2004, at 6:34:30

When I look at my self in the mirror from the left side I notice I look different than I do when I look at my self from the right side. I think I have some odd defect or I think maybe I'm a split person with 2 minds. I believe that when I am talking to people from my left side I have a different mind than when I am talking to people from my right side. What type of delusion is this?

Every single day and sometimes many times during a day, I don't look the same if I look in the mirror or recognize myself. I feel like there is someone else there and it can be scary and terribly difficult to function normally. It's miserable and I'm sorry that you are experiencing the same thing. What is your dx? It sounds like you might be experiencing an alter who is altering the way you see yourself. Are you in therapy right now?

I'm in the middle of reading "The man who mistook his wife for a hat" by Oliver Sacks. He is a neurologist. One of the chapters describes a woman who was only able to "see" the right half of her world - she didn't know that there *WAS* a left half. She finally got a wheelchair that would swivel 360 degrees. She would swivel to the right until she saw that half of her plate that she couldn't see before - then she could finish her dinner (well, she could finish half of what was left, because she was still missing the left half of what was left... Read the book - he describes it better than I ever could). She couldn't swivel to the left - because "left" didn't exist for her, so she had to go to the right in almost a whole circle.

No idea if this is related at all to what is going on with you, but your post reminded me of this book.

I have posted to you before about something like this. I really, really think and encouage you to get to a psychiatrist immediately. If that avenue isn't open to you, then take yourself to the hospital and ask for help there. They can put you in touch with the right people. Please don't wait any longer. Hugs to you.

Sometimes I feel something similar from my depersonalization.

It happens often in malls because they have glass doors. I will be walking towards the door, see someone on the other side of the door, walking towards me ... and its only when I'm like 1 foot from the door that I'll realize its actually me. Sometimes I just don't recognize myself ... I've scared myself silly quite a few times with those blasted mirrors and windows.

Well, I don't know specifically what type of delusion it is, but I have very similar problems.
