Dude, where's my car?

Posted by kara lynne on September 8, 2003, at 13:40:40

This morning I woke up to the delightful hacking---approaching dry heaving--of my incessantly smoking teenage neighbor. His testosterone-fueled, booming young voice came thundering through the walls as he carried on an agitated telephone conversation --something he spends most of his life doing. It went something like this: "Dude, I'm all dude...you better not *&^&ing do that now, because I'll $%^ing %$#ing dude dude. And then I'm all, dude...I have more friends than you'll ever have, and dude...I have 3 times the strength of that ^%$ing ^%hole, and then I'm all DUDE. But really dude, and then I'm all...dude."

So basically we have three or four 'words'" dude, I'm, all and *&^*ing. And we jumble them around repeatedly to create different sentences, which somehow create a conversation that the person on the other end can understand and respond to--probably with the same four words.

This discourages me. I'm all, I like people to at least try to form complete sentences. But then I'm all DUDE, my ex was a publisher and look where that got me. He could think of 150 different ways to slay me with his words. So now I'm all, well maybe this is what I should go for. I'm all, if that's what I'm destined for than maybe I can just hand him a dictionary and we can be like, you know, I'm all---friends, dude.

Ok, this is all like, not cool anymore.

Last night, until 3am, the Trailor Park soundtrack bellowed through my walls. On the other side of their living room is my bedroom--the wall acts as more of a huge speaker than insulation (what kind of wood were they using?!):

"My girlfriend's mom's a %$ing crack addict. Her mom's a total slut, she's all like been with different men every day and then she does crack and goes to work..." Pause. Goes outside to smoke so it can waft in to the other side of my house...comes back in, hacking, and undoubtly partaking himself of crack or crank or...Coors. The sentences recycle ad infinitum, but now we have at least expanded our vocabulary to include 'slut' ,'whore' and 'crack' .

I yelled politely, "Could you please keep it down?" Ok, I didn't have the nerve to go over there. I'm too scared, I admit it. They didn't seem to hear me. Another hour passed. I banged on the wall. They seemed to move some furniture around and the voices changed position. I put on earplugs. They helped considerably, but I could still hear the steady droning as I fell into my disturbed slumber.

kara kara kara,

way NOT cool ... at all .... okay, i'm freaked

... i've got three concerns here:
1) your safety
2) your safety
and
3) your safety

we have you proximate to and in confict with DANGEROUS "people" ... ... the neighbors in the next room ...
... ... i'm open to solutions:
1) move out?
2) ... ... what's second here?

i can't even do any "like"s or "dude"s anymore
... ... if they were just using heroin i might not be so worried ...

... ... so i'm just going to scream for help:

Thank you jimster. I apologize in advance if I've offended anyone who lives in a trailor park, but this is very upsetting.

Last night I started to resign myself to the inevitable and seemingly only solution--moving. The thought of that, like, totally overwhelms me. Can you say 'move 3 times in 3 months' fast? I may try to explain the situation to my senile landlord, but that's a tricky situation.

Oh, Dude.

oh, Babe,

the landlord ... there's an approach i hadn't thought of ... ... landlords have a lot of liabilty for having tenants who pose risks to other tenants ...
.. ... now if he weren't too diminished to appreciate these facts, we'd be happenin' ...
... ... how some ever ...

... this May not work at all
... and it could make things worse if his senility does Not include appropriate discretion ... ... and positive action ... ... and it might not ...

... i was afraid you'd just moved ...

sorry!

I spoke to his wife, I just said they were very loud and kept me up until 3am. She said there were complaints from the prior tenants, and she seemed to be understanding. I don't know what they're actually going to do , but now they know. Technically they were just 'talking', what do you do with that? I guess I could have said maybe they were drinking, or something, but I was very nervous making the call in first place and kind of stammered all over myself.

Ah well.

.... perfectly understandable ... ... every reason in the world to be as circumspect as possible ... can't be overdoing it when we don't want to draw fire ... ...
... ... now the dudes' history may be leveraged here ... ... but it will require more chattiing up the landlord and or his wife .... ... how hard should it be for them to distinguish a good tenant from the bad ? ... ... having an ongoing problem which is running off good tenants should be motivating ... ... lay it out as 'how can you keep good tenants with this action? only subtler ... ...

... then there's possible escalations ... but we want to work this landlord ....
... see if there's any sense of any action on the landlord's part
... any sense of motivation from your concerns / complaint
... any sensitivity to your concerns with confidetiality of your complaints with the appropriate discretion on landys' part ...
.... you could inquire innocently with landlord if they knew of any illeagal drug activities involved with these late night escapades:

"you don't think they'd be using something that keeps them up?"
"are landlords liable for know drug abuse problems on their property ?"

... not my best, but you get this idea ....
... yeah, right, jim, just work it into the conversation ... ... sure ...

more later !

-how hard should it be for them to distinguish a good tenant from the bad ? ... ... having an ongoing problem which is running off good tenants should be motivating ... ... lay it out as 'how can you keep good tenants with this action? only subtler ... ...

You covered it all, jimi. And actually it did go there. She said, "Well certainly you could have better neighbors than those!" At which point I told here I have just the perfect person and know of a nice woman who's looking to move here. (You know--all very lighthearted, of course, but true). She said to just hang on---but we all know that could mean for the next 10 years. Then I did say that I waited until it got bad before I called because I hated to bother anyone about it, and intimated that if it stayed really bad I would probably.... and she finished my sentence by saying "not want to stay?" I said yes.

Working the drug thing into it is going to be a lot trickier, although of course now I realize more things I could have at least hinted at yesterday. I love your line about landlord liablility--that might light a fire under them, but working it into the conversation in any subtle way might be impossible. You've got great ideas though, jimi, I'm impressed. Nothing wrong with suggesting something might be keeping them up at night...

And yes, now we'll see if there's any sense of motivation from them. Thank you for understanding so well, my Buddah Dude.
