Looks like it's Baltimore

Posted by bookgurl99 on June 18, 2003, at 9:03:43

Looks like my gf and I will be striking out for the Baltimore area (from the midwest).

I feel scared, but excited at the same time.

Anyone know anything about Baltimore?

1) it's John Waters' hometown, and the setting for the movie _Hairspray_.
2) there's a touristy waterfront area.
3) crabcakes are big
4) I once went to a tiny metal-band costume club there in the late 80s.
5) surely it's got to be more fun than the midwest?

Edgar Allen Poe died there and buried there.

Star Spangled Banner written there? I think?

Setting for Anne Tyler novels.

Was setting for great TV show that went off the air too soon--Homicide.

Acc. to something I read recently in the business section, that area of the country is apparently one of the few where jobs are growing, not shrinking.

Johns Hopkins is there

Johns Hopkins, one of the best medical centers in the country, is in Baltimore. Some departments are considered better than their counterparts at Harvard.

Orials will not only birds to you now, but your hometown ball club, if you are into baseball at all. I know this from an obsessed fan of Cal Ribkin (sp?) who won the record for most consecutive games played ever in the Majors\

There are good things about Baltimore but I personally dont like it. The crime rate is
also really bad.

i looked up the school and am feeling really passionate about wanting to enter it. i have always really wanted to study cognitive linguistics, and the school has a great undergrad/grad cognitive science program that does the sort of work i'm looking to do.

several years ago, when i brought up studying these topics here at my state school, some of my profs looked at me like i was crazy! and here prestigious universities are setting up programs in it.

i have a terrible undergrad record due to mental illness/health issues, but I _must_ find a way to trojan horse my way in.

i'm excited to go. any advice about where to live?

made a risky move re:johns hopkins

i decided to email the director of multicultural student affairs at johns hopkins my story.

i thought i'd try contacting him, as i'm hispanic, and his mission involves assisting minority jhu students -- which i'm hoping to be!

it's funny -- i always felt shy about pursuing assistance via channels for 'minorities,' as i did not have a stereotypical 'underpriviledged minority' upbringing. (i grew up in middle class family in rural areas, not in a 'project,' and speak english as a native language -- although i learned it along with spanish in my early years.)

however, i'm now realizing that if i had had a mother from the united states, i would have been at an advantage because my mother would have understood the culture around attending university and selecting colleges. in addition, if i were from a solely 'white' family, i may have had grandparents that had attended college -- there would have been a greater wealth of knowledge about and expectation of success in college overall in my family.

maybe that is a long justification for using these resources, but maybe i need it to feel right with myself.

anyways, i don't expect that with a bad record being a minority will earn me a pass -- things don't work that way. but i am hoping that by contacting this gentleman, i will find some assistance as i work towards this dream.

hope i did the right thing by spilling my guts to him.

There is nothing wrong with asking for help or making use of the resources available to you. I hope things work out for you. It sounds like such an exciting time for you! Good luck. :)

Ditto what Dinah said. Go for it!

But, BTW, just to avoid assumptions--all white here and grandparents didn't go to college. Grandmothers finished high school, grandfathers didn't have the opportunity to do so. But strong emphasis on education for their chidlren, and then from my parents to us, etc.

yeah; the cultural experience with higher education isn't just race-based. that's why it's great that there are scholarships for 'first-generation' college attendees, regardless of race.

in some ways, i think coming from a rural area was more of a hindrance to me -- just that there's less of an understanding and sophistication about the whole process. meanwhile, upper-class families in big cities are sending their kids to 'college advisors' who help craft their applications and grease the skids. Although either way can be a problem -- being 'pushed' to an elite school because your folks went to it, as well as only knowing about the world within the state borders.

maybe not Baltimore, maybe Chicago

*sigh*

My gf is thinking Chicago would be better, as her degree is from the University of Wisconsin and may be more marketable in the midwest.

Luckily, Northwestern University has a cog. sci. program that looks as good as the one at Johns Hopkins -- _and_ -- I know it's weird, but when I was 18 (10 years ago) I helped create a scholarship in my hometown and it was named after me -- and a few students have gone there on 'my' scholarship. So that could help me get in, I think.

I am feeling calm either way. Just wish there was a way to gaze into a crystal ball and find out what would make us happier.

I love Chicago...used to live there years ago. Big city options with nice neighborhoods within. If you do go there I'll post some more information/links. Then, if you're thinking Northwestern then you might not live in the city at all. In the end, a place is just a place, like any other. Take care of yourself and your partner and you'll be fine. Keep us posted.
