We need new words. I don't think 'shallow' quite hits the mark.

Yes. I'll need to think on this.

Getting a different take on Putin is interesting. I think he is completely antidemocratic, but a good friend of mine says only fascism will be able to deal with global warming, so who knows. I'll be dead in twenty years (on the optimistic side) and no longer registered to vote. Siberia will become the world's breadbasket, and Putin will still be president. But he is a hydrocarbon oligarch....
Biden is running. Just when I felt ok to read the news again :(
How are your elections going?

Labor will win. They should. I hope so. The bookies think they will. The polls have been consistent. People prefer Morrison, but Like Plath might have said, 'Every Australian adores a fascist'.
Of course Putin is not democratic, although I trust the election results. If I were Russian I might vote for him. I actually listened to Ana Politovskaya at the Sydney Writers Festival. She was murdered by 'Putin' shortly after, which makes as much sense as 'Trump' as a category.

The same Plath line works here too. I think of that line often, actually, like it's written into my DNA. Not everyone in the US has drank the Russia koolaid. Corruption is the key. Trump is corrupt and the entire system is corrupt. Bloody hydrocarbon oligarchs. All of them.
Lake Eerie was granted the full rights of a person by Toledo Ohio. If corporations, why not public water, national parks, coastlines, etc? In my opinion, that begins the redress.

Well, Ariel, and the Bell Jar, and maybe it was Letters Home (was that edited by her mother?). In the Plath Archives by Janet Malcolm
Australia had some sort of egalitarian/authoritarian tradition. And the neoliberal reforms here were brought in by the ALP, and were therefore more moderate and inclusive.
One important difference is compulsory voting and the acceptance of it. Around 80% of people vote.
How come the whole system is corrupt? Someone must vote them in. The entire Liberal Party membership here is extremist compared to how it was 40 years ago. So they misrepresent themselves to their constituents and sometimes get caught out.
Is it the liberal media in the US? The possible lesson that might be drawn from Trump is intentionally excluded by the Russia stuff.
The NYT has done a special on Murdoch, I hear. This dreadful politics is pure Murdoch

No, I don't, although I recall the group. I might have started on classical music then?

After a stiff vodka (Ciroq) I found this funnier than I should have.....
You know who wrote it surely?'It made inevitable our kakistocracy, rule by the worst or most unscrupulous (kakistocracy is derived from the Greek words kakistos, meaning worst, and kratos, meaning rule).
Those in the parade of imbeciles, grifters, con artists, conspiracy theorists, racists, Trump family members, charlatans, generals and Christian fascists, all of whom often see power as a way to enrich themselves at the expense of the taxpayer, are too many to list here. They include former Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price, Ivanka Trump, Jared Kushner.....'
The world is a bit hard to take sometimes.

Ladbrokes accepted a A$1 million bet at 1.23 for an ALP win.
That sounds right.
I'd be *reasonably* comfortable making that bet. Put on 1 million, get 2.23 back. I guess so, rather than the other way.
Social media here is full of stuff about the ALP taxing everything. Even like with some people you know, which makes me want to stay inside. My generation is a problem.

Taxes are for losers. The news might have broken in the Guardian. I haven't checked yet, but the NYT did an exposé on Trump finances.

I thought Chris Hedges' style would stand out.
From today's Counterpunch......
What constitutes the bulwark of our own liberty and independence? It is not our frowning battlements, our bristling sea coasts, the guns of our war steamers, or the strength of our gallant and disciplined army . . . Our defense is in the preservation of the spirit which prizes liberty as the heritage of all men, in all lands, every where. Destroy this spirit, and you have planted the seeds of despotism around your own doors.
President Abraham Lincoln, September 11, 1858
Civilisational failure writ large.

Certainly it was used in German speaking Europe.
I wouldn't look for too much difference between kakistocracy and kakastocracy.

That was what I thought when I read what you said.

I started watching Billy T videos. I forgot he was a really wonderful comedian, indeed.
I didn't know his tribe took his body. There have been other cases like that, in NZ. Maaori who don't want their tribe to have their body when they die. Maaori who live apart from the tribe and don't want that to happen. Then their tribe take the body. Digging it up, if they have to.
The courts...
What are you going to do? Imprison the whole tribe over it?
?
Sigh.

My disappointment was Jared and Jr weren't cuffed for something or other. There is corruption. That is what this is all about. The Southern District of New York has taken that up, to what end remains to be seen. If the corruption of that family and friends is not exposed, then I will truly feel lost. The entire political/financial mechanism. The clockworks. That should be exposed. But it won't be. So I'll make due with pieces.
