Good company

Mr Obama may be the new president, but Mr Howard is lodged in Blair House.

I am pleased to see he will honoured in the company of Mr Tony Blair and Sr Alvaro Uribe with the Presidential Medal of Freedom next week.

They, with President Bush, have had a significant effect on the welfare of people in the third world.

I thought you'd find this interesting Sig....If you ask Bono, George W. Bush did a considerable amount for promoting fair trade and Third World causes, such as debt reduction and helping to get cheap and lifesaving AIDS drugs to Africa. Bush and some of the top people in the Republican party didn't have to give Bono the time of day (as Bono admitted), but they gave him and his causes plenty. Bill Gates and his DATA organization where another example, and Gates is a staunch Republican. These things certainly are important examples that I hope too are remembered.

Didn't Clinton start the AIDS drug thing rolling in the third world countries? He is totally involved in it.. well, up to HRC becoming SOS.I'm a bit confused about what he can do and not do now.

He has the heart that I feel has been absent for too long in international causes.
He and Poppy have teamed up efficently and I am proud of them for that.

At the time of the AIDS thing with GWB there was a heightened awareness of the need to diversify out of middle east oil, and lots was being discovered off the coast of Africa. There seems to have been a bit of a scramble. I read that the Chinese offered the rulers of the Congo (Zaire) $6 Billion for their cobalt and some other minerals, and this has something to do with Nkunda and the Rwandan backed insurgency there.

Ya, that's politics, eh? heh. I've been learning a lot in particular from Bono, with his way of diplomacy and grace, while still standing for his issues. One thing I really try to get away from, especially as I get older, is 'party politics'. It's the people, not the party, that *make* the candidate. That has been a hard lesson for me too learn. But, as I approach middle age, I am 'mellowing', in a way I very much like, to see beyond 'black and white'. I've actually read with enthusiasm about some of the issues that President Bush Jr. has dealt with in a way I consider good for humankind. The Humanitarian issues in Africa where the ones I really stood up and noticed.

It also has to be said, there are a few key elected Republicans who said they will give Obama their full co-operation. I was impressed, because it bothered me the way that many of them treated Bill Clinton. But, have they learned a lesson? It may be so. Obama certainly does not have to give in to every Republican demand just to prove he is a "co-operative" President. But, at least he will listen, and respect. We so badly need these things in politics...the "gentle persons" way. It doesn't matter left, right, center. We, I think, could really get so much more done this way. Maybe I am talking a bit about the "Third Way"...but certainly not as an absolute 'solution'.

Jay

Yeah, I have trouble giving (finding?) credit to GWB.

I was trying to think of something his administration had done that I liked and was aware of, and all I could think of was Laura Bush reading to Burmese refugee kids in Thailand.
