As a Jew, with much increased tolerance in the Middle East, it could come theoretically at some point in the very distant future. At the moment there is a lot of xenophobia here, but even more in France (which occupied part of the Maghreb in the past) and the Netherlands where foreign populations but up against "natives" and there are unfortunately some violent splinter group Muslims hidden among people who just want to have their lives.

How about a Woman Jewish Lesbian ...Democrat or very moderate Republican :)? I mean the choices can be like a jackpot pull. Or maybe in the completely far future we will have a parliamentary style government. I doubt that though, our Constitution is pretty entrenched.

I don't think it really matters though the race... I dont see Obama as a black president -- well yes I do because I was born into a previous generation that isn't as color blind as today's kids, at least the ones who are told to be so, but I really see him as a powerful, educated orator, rather than just the first Black president.

I mean he even made the off the cuff remark about the white house dog, saying we'd like a pound dog, but it could be a mutt like me.... what African-American would have said that 10 or 20 or 30 years ago.

Aw man, atheists are never going to be president. LOL

Wow, it's so weird to think so many believe in "god" or whatever.

I tend to think everyone is like me.

I'm agnostic, not atheist, which means I really am not practicing, I do identify with my roots, but it basically means to me that maybe there is some ethereal being that existed before the big bang, in fact before many universes and bangs and propelled things forward. It also means that I think, in times of great danger that someone was looking out for me.

There goes the old joke -- and I didn't make this up because neither insomnia nor dyslexia are funny but:

"Did you hear about the agnostic dyslexic insomniac?

He lay awake all night wondering if there really is a Dog !"

But yes, I agree -- as I've said before... the old flag salute... one nation, indivisible, with liberty... and then the McCarthyism of the 50s changed it to one nation "under god", indivisible...

The founding fathers tried to make this a country separating church and state. There is no mention of "God" in the Constitution or the Bill of Rights. After all, they were fleeing religious persecution from England. And prominent among them were deists anyhow.

But you can't make a political announcement, inaugural address, court statements, without "may God Bless the United States of America" or something like that.

It's curious how a famous Jewish American composer, lyricist, not strongly religious, but inspired by patriotism wrote "God Bless America" although he didn't use it in his revues at the time. Irving Berlin lived to a ripe old age of 101 too and could not read or write music -- he had help.

Now I have nothing against the words blessing our country, since I'm agnostic, it doesnt bother me a lot -- but its the power they have to religions who are eroding the separation of church and state, and that they should not be there for people who really don't have a belief or do not want to swear on bibles in court (some jurisdictions do allow an alternate oath fortunately).

God Bless America is a nice song, but its just a song to me -- yes, it strikes of patriotism, nothing wrong, [although we are probably among Western countries the ones who put out the US Flag at a moments notice all over the place while Canada does it for tourism I think :)], that's what I get out of it.

The national anthem of the US has no mention of God

Until 1974 or so the second verse of our national anthem was this magnificent piece of paranoia

>O Lord our God arise,
Scatter her enemies
And make them fall;
Confound their politics,
Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On Thee our hopes we fix,
God save us all!

which we swapped for this

>Australians all let us rejoice
For we are young and free
We've golden soil and wealth for toil,
Our home is girt by sea:
Our land abounds in nature's gifts
Of beauty rich and rare,
In history's page let every stage
Advance Australia fair,
In joyful strains then let us sing
Advance Australia fair.

which is clearly a settler song of pretty doubtful morality, not to say taste.
Fortunately people think the words are

>Australians all eat ostriches
For breakfast lunch and tea
tum tum te tum tum tum te tum
Our lands are girt by sea etc

*Everyone* knows that last line.

The Chinese national anthem is interesting

>March of the Volunteers
Arise,
Ye who refuse to be slaves!
With our very flesh and blood,
Let us build our new Great Wall!
The peoples of China are in the most critical time,
Everybody must roar his defiance.
Arise!
Arise!
Arise!
Millions of hearts with one mind,
Brave the enemy's gunfire, March on!
Brave the enemy's gunfire, March on!
March on!
March on!
on!
