At the moment there is a lot of xenophobia here, but even more in France (which occupied part of the Maghreb in the past) and the Netherlands where foreign populations but up against "natives" and there are unfortunately some violent splinter group Muslims hidden among people who just want to have their lives.
How about a Woman Jewish Lesbian ...Democrat or very moderate Republican :)? I mean the choices can be like a jackpot pull. Or maybe in the completely far future we will have a parliamentary style government. I doubt that though, our Constitution is pretty entrenched.
I don't think it really matters though the race... I dont see Obama as a black president -- well yes I do because I was born into a previous generation that isn't as color blind as today's kids, at least the ones who are told to be so, but I really see him as a powerful, educated orator, rather than just the first Black president.
I mean he even made the off the cuff remark about the white house dog, saying we'd like a pound dog, but it could be a mutt like me.... what African-American would have said that 10 or 20 or 30 years ago.
