Stop. Hey. What's That Sound? Everybody Look What's Going Down.
by Terry Olynik
There's something happening here.
What it is ain't exactly clear.
There's a man with a gun over there,
Telling me I've got to beware.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25630796/This is really heating up right now and having camped in alot of national parks, it scares the hell out of me to think it might actually happen.

Last week there was a (redundant expression alert!) tragic killing in Indianapolis. The 20-something daughter of a local minister was shot dead - the daughter of a man whose life's work has been fighting exactly this kind of violence.
I'm happy to listen to the concerns of NRA members, but I'd like to see those who think Moses came down from the mountain with the 2nd Amendment on a stone tablet sit down with a man like and have an honest heart-to-heart discussion about how to protect their sacred rights without condemning the flower of our urban youth to senseless shootings.
Too many gun advocates respond to tragedies like this with absurd cliches about the real problem being not enough armed citizens - as if return fire would bring back a dead young woman. And in this case, it appears the young lady was well-armed...

Darn! My cat stepped on my mouse and deleted the message that I was typing!
That is a tragic story and I think is a good example concerning beliefs and choices.
I tell the students that we come into a world where our beliefs are usually provided for us by family. Then teachers and clergy offer up more.
We get to a certain age and start forumlating our own beliefs...then comes choices.
We are in control of our choices and sometimes they turn out to be wrong for us and those around us.
Obviously, I believe that choosing to live by the gun is a tragic mistake.
The NRA can rant and rave all they want about "defending" ourselves..she surely wasn't able to and look at the firepower that was available to her.
I grew up with guns and we were taught that we owned them for one reason and that was to obtain food. I was born during the Depression and we ate alot of venison and other game. I never saw one of our guns leave our property through our front door. The hunter left through the woods behind our house and when he returned with the gun, it was locked up until he needed it again.
This is the end of the thread.
