We should have done something a decade ago.
Rising energy prices will make the choices before us more difficult.
The Howard government, like the Blair government, offered the USA an alibi that was appreciated more than it was respected.
We should be able to tell each other the truth.
Unlike the US, Australia has very little room to move with climate change.
This looks like it is just the beginning.
I hope they are wrong.http://www.smh.com.au/news/environment/2100-a-climatic-odyssey/2008/07/04/1214951042632.html

Meanwhile in my local paper we had the following...
Wednesday - front page story, our congressman saying our only energy problem is that we're not drilling in enough places. On editorial page, the editor promotes renewable energy.
Thursday - letter to the editor; marginally literate screed attacking Wednesday's editorial, flinging a bewildering array of Rush Limbaugh-esque ad hominem attacks
Saturday - letter arguing that global warming is just a hoax dreamed up by Al Gore
Here is red-state America it seems many of us have our heads lodged firmly and proudly underground...

I heard Garnaut on the radio last night. I don't know if you call it econometrics or statistics? I kinda got the drift of what he was saying though. He is Australia's leading free market economist, the one who did the report that led to the Hawke/Keating economic reforms. And then there was the IPCC (if that is the right name) saying something similar. They seem to be saying that we have LESS THAN ten years to get this right, especially if we want other countries to cooperate. One thing that has kicked this off is the impending collapse of the Murray-Darling basin, which is that area west of the range in eastern Australia from southern Queensland through New South Wales and Victoria round to South Australia.

Right. The thing about IPCC's reports is that they're very conservative - the "I" stands for "Intergovernmental," which means you need officials from lots of countries to sign off on the reports. The best estimate of the severity of the climate crisis is much bleaker than even IPCC says.
This is the end of the thread.
