Doris Lessing says 9/11 not that bad

I don't think she's crazy, I think that's an insult to crazy people. The word evil comes to mind or hate filled..

Lessing says 9/11 'not that bad'
Nobel Prize-winning author Doris Lessing has said that the 11 September attacks were "not that terrible" compared to the IRA's terror campaign.
"Some Americans will think I'm crazy... but it was neither as terrible or as extraordinary as they think," the writer told Spanish newspaper El Pais.

The 88-year-old added that "people forget" the IRA bomb attack on Margaret Thatcher's government in 1984.

Lessing won the Nobel prize, worth £763,000, honouring her 57-year career.

Five people died and 34 were injured when an IRA bomb exploded in a Brighton hotel where leading members of the Conservative party - including Mrs Thatcher - were staying for its annual conference.

The author conceded that "many people died and two prominent buildings fell" in the attacks on New York's World Trade Center in 2001.

............

Lessing was awarded the Nobel Prize for her "fire and visionary power", and is due to collect her award at a ceremony in Stockholm on 10 December.

Hi S v Z

Since she was born around 1919 she would have had the opportunity to witness colonialism, WW11, liberation struggles, the Cold War, Marxism and the collapse of communism.
(And from the wrong side too....her comments on Marxism are illuminating..... that there was a seductive attraction to feeling that one had been given a means of decoding the mysteries of history).

I worry about the fragility of our democratic processes.
Peak oil may have passed, and maybe Iraq was a preemptive strike?

If our institutions(?) have proved so frail after this amount of stress, it will be interesting to see what comes in the future when the sh*t really hits the fan.

It's certainly true that Americans ought to remember that people in many, many other nations have been victims of "terrorism." But Lessing chose a rather poor example in citing the IRA as worse, at least in terms of number of victims. In 35 years the IRA apparently failed to match the single-day 9/11 death toll (see, for instance, http://www.ocregister.com/ocr/sections/nation_world/nation_world/article_614859.php)

I think she's just not thinking very clearly. She was really annoyed about receiving the Nobel Prize, lecturing reporters seeking her reaction about how the prize money will just bring people to her door begging for handouts. She complained that the prize means nothing artistically, though she did brighten when a reporter pointed out that it might result in more people reading her work - something she apparently hadn't even considered before!

Please be sensitive to the feelings of others. Even if you're quoting someone else.

But please don't take this personally, this doesn't mean I don't like you or think you're a bad person.

If you or others have questions about this or about posting policies in general, or are interested in alternative ways of expressing yourself, please first see the FAQ:

http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/faq.html#civil
http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/faq.html#enforce

Follow-ups regarding these issues should be redirected to Psycho-Babble Administration. They, as well as replies to the above post(s), should of course themselves be civil.

Thanks,

Bob

PS: According to the new formula:

duration of previous block: 6 weeks
period of time since previous block: 3 weeks
severity: 2 (default)
block length = 11.00 rounded = 11 weeks
