He screwed my spelling up that bloke. I thought I had it right, but now everytime with those vegetables I have to think very carefully.

I've never been confident of my spelling, but I do ok if I don't think about it. Now I'm forced to think about it.

Are you only confused about "potato"-- or has he thrown you off on "tomato" too?

Poor guy. Maybe misspelling is part of the family heritage because someone in his family misspelled their name-- quail-- so he was mainly upholding tradition.

Sadly, what I think of when I think of Dan Quayle are all the things he DIDN'T say that are attributed to him...

He never did say that going to Latin America would make him wish he'd studied harder in Latin class, you know...

Then again, what really comes to mind is his comment that he thought he was "like a young John F. Kennedy." That, my friends, was NOT smart. If nothing else, he was comparing himself to an icon of THE OPPOSING PARTY! Not good thinking, if you ask me. Then again, saying it to Lloyd Bentson made it even more damaging.

{sigh}

Kinda miss him, considering my views of today's Republicans...

Yes, it's interesting how good all the politicians you couldn't stand look in retrospect. You know that Australian PM, Fraser, who lost his trousers in New Orleans (after he stopped being PM)? He defeated Whitlam (ALP) in 1975. At the time he was the crazy grazier, there werer big signs up saying 'turn on the gas, vote Liberal', and 'wanted for the murder of 200,000 Australians' and so on. Now he's a paragon of the left, speaking out about our 'unkind' treatment of refugees and the folly of our foreign policy. He might have got a bit nicer out of office and in his old age, but even so.

Aw, yeah.

But it did lead to one of the best political come-backs of the last 20 years.

How can you really rue that? I just love saying that phrase. It's so fun. You, sir, are no JFK.

I mean, come on-- that can be said almost at any time, to anyone.

Declan: To-ma-to To-ma-to To-ma-to.

Just say that (spell that) a few more times, and you life will be rid of one of its more nagging problems. You can do it! :) (And you said Pbabble never helped you....)

You are telling me the truth, Jost? I have no reason to disbelieve you on such a crucial matter, and I know you have nothing to gain by deceiving me. Except to ensure a lifetime of potato, or the other one muatis mutandis.

Yep, gotta agree -- I've used that line myself. "I knew [x], and you, sir, are no [x]."

Then again, I always did like Bentson. Cried when he died.

There's a tiny problem here, though. I believe it would be more effective to suggest "to-MAH-to." At least, it would in my kitchen...

I love you, but that drives me CRAZY! My mother-in-law says it that way, too. I have no idea which is "proper". I just know it's almost like nails on a chalkboard to me.

I'm weird that way.

Regarding Bentsen's comeback to Quayle...in the Ohio gubernatorial (sp?) debate last week, the Republican candidate, Ken Blackwell, appeared to have been "saving up" a similar zinger. His rebuttal to one of Ted Strickland's answers to a question posed by the panel was to say that he knew Roy Rogers and that Dr. Strickland was no Roy Rogers. I thought, "Humminahh?" Dr. Strickland comes from a humble background and from the same area of Ohio that apparently Roy Rogers came from. Perhaps Strickland previously said something comparing himself to Roy Rogers. But it just made no sense to me in the context of a rebuttal to Strickland's answer. It really seemed like Blackwell just couldn't wait any longer to deliver that line, regardless of whether it "fit" in that moment. It certainly lacked anything near the Bentsen's delivery of that classic.

Oh, and Ted laughed at the "zinger". Good for him. :)

That's cheating! You know that I say it that way, since we've talked about the basil plant that {ahem} used to be growing on my balcony!

But I'm glad you love me. I love you, too.

Declan, I would never under any circumstances mislead you as to the spelling of anything so essential to survival as the TO MAAAAAAAAY TO.

I am not an expert on the TO MAAAAAAH TO, but I can confirm unequivocally that the TO MAAAAAAAAAAAY TO is a poisonous fruit found in the land across the sea, and is highly detrimental to survival. Hence the importance of spelling it with punctilious attention to detail.

Should one fall afoul of the proper spelling of this pernicious fruit, one turns black, and various appendages have a propensity for defenestration. Or disassociation with others of them.

It is quite a dire situaton as you may imagine.

So I beg you, therewithall, my dear sir, to follow my instructions in the matter, at least of the TO MA TO, and take appropriate precautions should you approach the question of the disposition of its letters.

Your humble servant,

Jost

Does that mean I'll get in trouble for trying to grow them on my balcony?

(Not much chance they'll actually end up edible at this point, though: after looking pretty dormant through most of the summer, they suddenly got little yellow flowers on them towards late August, maybe; finally got some little green spheres sometime in early September -- only to explode into a ton of new growth, about a hundred new yellow flowers, and the starts of tiny green spheres about ten days ago... Guess I should have put a calendar where they could see it...)
