Please respect the views of others and be sensitive to their feelings.

But please also don't take this personally, this doesn't mean I don't like you or think you're a bad person.

If you or others have questions about this or about posting policies in general, or are interested in alternative ways of expressing yourself, please see the FAQ:

http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/faq.html#civil

Follow-ups regarding these issues should be redirected to Psycho-Babble Administration. They, as well as replies to the above post, should of course themselves be civil.

Thanks,

Bob

I was going to ask what carpet bombing was.. but maybe its uncivil?
Just picturing dropping carpets on canary's here. Or is it bombing carpets with that flea bomb stuff?
I suspect it's something similar to turning white snow black.. no it was US money turning black snow white:-)

all well, I'm glad I gave up following the US political news.

Tealady,
Carpet bombing is the dropping of large numbers of bombs over an area to insure complete destruction of that area. One literally drops enough bombs to "carpet" the entire area leaving nothing usable or habitable.

Thanks Dee. I really wasn't quite sure. It does make sense.. like carpets cover everything, right?

I thought that was how most US bombing went?
I vaguely recall seeing footage of film shot by Hollywood during WWII.. stuff that actually passed the US census(most didn't which I think surprised Hollywood?) of some towns in Italy beofre during and after the US liberated them from the Nazis, Not much left.
So I guess its not only Bush there, I guess.

Then show of strength in Iraq I watched was fairly "carpetting" of an area?? I guess that would be carpet bombing?

Actually, there is also "targeted" bombing, which is different. An example would be the laser guided bombs that were used in Baghdad. It's much newer technology than WW2.

The idea is to take out specific targets and minimize civilian casualties. They are amazingly accurate, though even they occasionally go off target.

Carpet bombing is the practice of dropping hundreds in an area hoping they hit something important. It's rarely done anymore.

The idea behind carpet bombing is to break the will of the people. The idea behind target bombing is to take out their military capability.

I hate all bombing, but this is a big improvement in technology - if you're a civilian.
