The Power of the People

Posted by AuntieMel on December 15, 2005, at 13:04:50

Showing that the opinion of the people *does* matter.

From the New York Times:

WASHINGTON (AP) -- After months of resistance, the White House has agreed to accept Sen. John McCain's call for a law specifically banning cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment of foreign suspects in the war on terror, several congressional officials said Thursday.

Under the emerging deal, the CIA and other civilian interrogators would be given the same legal rights as currently guaranteed members of the military who are accused of breaking interrogation guidelines, these officials added. Those rules say the accused can defend themselves by arguing it was reasonable for them to believe they were obeying a legal order.

The congressional officials spoke on condition of anonymity, saying they did not want to pre-empt an expected announcement later in the day at the White House, possibly by President Bush and McCain.

.............

The White House at one point threatened a veto if the ban was included in legislation sent to the president's desk, and Vice President Dick Cheney made an unusual personal appeal to all Republican senators to give an exemption to the CIA.

But congressional sentiment was overwhelmingly in favor of the ban, and McCain, a former Navy pilot who was held and tortured for five years in Vietnam, adopted the issue.

this is good news. It has been terrifying to think of individuals being randomly tortured by the U.S. Gov't.

Now let's hope he sticks to his promise to rebuild new orleans.

Today he committed to levee restoration. It's not category 5, and it's not coastal restoration, but it's a positive step, and New Orleanians have hope for the first time in a long time. At least what happened this time (floodwall failure in a Category 2 storm) won't happen again under the new plan of having pumping stations where the lake meets the canals, preventing storm surge from entering the drainage canals.

That's good news, too. I'm betting with the new scrutiny that the levees will actually be built according to design this time.

Not like the old ones that were supposed to be cat 3 but weren't built properly.

They might even be able to get some of the inspectors out of their cars *before* the restaraunt. Or maybe that's asking too much.

And the president's perfect record won't be broken.

He hasn't vetoed a bill yet.

here is a reason for this:
http://writ.news.findlaw.com/dean/20060113.html
we have not heard about the corrosive effect on legislative authority of gee dubya's "signing statements", but he feels he can sign anything and then issue a statement that explains he will do whatever he wants.
John Dean explains it better.

and resident Shrubya did give himself an escape clause with his signing statement on McCain's anti-torture bill.

i would dearly wish there were real protections against our government using torture. i just don't think we have them yet.

i think our laws have been clear enough up until now.
i feel the problem is the peoople in charge.
like "ick-day aynee-chay", for instance.

he was crossing his fingers ("King's X", we used to say as kids),
when he was signing the law.

Please respect the views of others and be sensitive to their feelings. The last time you were blocked it was for 4 weeks, so this time it's for 8.

If you or others have questions about this or about posting policies in general, or are interested in alternative ways of expressing yourself, please see the FAQ:

Follow-ups regarding these issues should be redirected to Psycho-Babble Administration. They, as well as replies to the above post, should of course themselves be civil.

Thanks,

Bob

Yes, I agree. I think this kid of extremist position has no place on psychobabble. Plenty of decent ordinary people trust the President.

Perhaps not. But he has reserved to himself discretion regarding the provisions of the McCain bill that make it doubtful whether any real changes will be made.

A perfect record, indeed.
