Okay. So I was going to participate in the Halloween evening in our building.
It was a last minute decision-- and I ran out to buy candy. There was only the worst junk in the supermarket. I bought it.
then on the way upstairs (I try to walk up once a day), I saw that everyone had put out these little baskets of candy. it was all so much better than mine that I lost my nerve. Now I have this huge pile of the worst, most inedible hershey's m & ms and a few other things.
Do kids like this stuff? I kept imagining these sophisticated NY kids looking at my candy and going-- "this is all you're got??? I don't like this candy, Daddy. Waaaah."
I heard them out in hall, though.
Grrrrrr.

proud you went and joined in anyway. fergit the bozos who weren't appreciative of your efforts. and try to quiet that noisy voice inside that tells you others ppl are better in some way. that is the LYING voice of depression!! (and c'mon, some of your bldg residents who put bowls of candy out probably did so in designer Mexican pottery full of lead...or last year's lollypops so hard by now they're a dental hazard...or bought those trendy but deadly jelly candies that you slurp down like a drink shot...better? nah, just different)
it wasn't easy for you to join in but you did. good for you!! as for "sophisticated NY kids" I think they're just as goofy and sugar hungry as any kid in the USA getting their Halloween fix!

My only Halloween worry was running out of candy and having kids seek revenge. Kids here like M&Ms and peanut butter cups, so what you got would be okay in Milwaukee. Sorry those NY kids made your Halloween scary.

At about 8pm, I realized that I hadn't bought ANY candy. I pulled our light-blocking living room curtains shut, turned off the porch light and made sure there weren't any bedroom lights on. Then I watched TV in guilt.
Talk about being scared! I was anxious a cutesie little 3 year old would toddle up our stairs and I'd have to resort to giving her a can of sugar-free RedBull.
hm.

That reminds me of a wonderful Raymond Carver story in "Will You Please Be Quiet Please" (I think) about an unemployed man failing to hide properly from a vacuum cleaner salesman.
It is very very funny.

That sounds like a great story, Sigismund. I'm looking for things to read, so I'm going to order some carver from Amazon.
I just read a story by Carson McCullers. Ever read anything by her? She seems pretty good, but maybe too heavy-handed and one-noteish, but the story is pretty powerful. Offbeat and different--
Thanks for the recommendation.
