binge eating at night

Posted by Angela2 on February 8, 2008, at 10:43:47

A lot of times I binge eat at night. Sometimes I do it because I am lonely. Other times is because I am bored. A little while ago I got a hold of it becuase I realized I have the power to make it stop. But Lately I have been so unhappy that I've started it up again, not caring what it does to my body until the next morning when I feel so guilty.

On a positive note, you know why you binge. Most people do not have that insight.

Are you really bingeing, or just over-eating. I ask because for me a binge is anything over 100 calories.

You say you feel unhappy. Do you see a therapist or are you on meds? Prozac is said to stop the binge cycle, but I don't know if that is true.

You need to deal with your sadness and then your problems with food probably won't be as bad.

Good luck.

Hi Angela2,

It's a positive that you figured out what causes the bingeing. I know that guilty feeling very well. Bingeing (and for me purging) seems so right at the time, just what I need and then that feeling goes away and I'm back to anxiety or boredom or whatever triggered the binge.

You are right that you have the power to make it stop, I know it isn't easy, but try to keep that power in mind when you want to binge. Is there anything you can do when you are lonely or bored? Call someone? Watch a favorite movie? Something that'll take your mind away from bingeing will satisfy my needs. I know this is easier said than done, I binged yesterday on stuff I normally would not because I gained weight and hate my body. You'd think I'd catch on that bingeing makes me fatter?

Think of some distractions and focus on that you know what's triggering the binges and post how you're doing.

yeah I eat over 100 calories, like after I've had dinner.

I just started seeing a therapist. I'm trying to get out more too (to make friends n stuff). babble is helpful too though.

Maxime, I think there are times when I don't know why I eat so much. But other times I see it is due to loneliness or boredom.

Thank you for your thoughtful response!!

I don't want to make this into a big deal..even though I do it, even if just a little, more often than not. I dunno.

That is a good idea about the distractions. Maybe I will rent a movie tonight. really good idea!

Thanks for responding to my post, I appreciate it!

hey angela-- just saw your post. i experience the same thing myself sometimes. the only time i feel like i have an appetite is late at night, right before i go to bed. i don't know if i start eating becasue i'm actually hungry since i might not have eaten enough during the day. but in any case, once i start eating, i eat a ton, mostly sweets. i've wondered whether the eating might be med-related. i take a bunch of seroquel right before bed, and just as i'm getting sleepy, i also get an appetite. or it could just be coincidence. anyway, i do wish i could spread out the eating during the day and taper off at night.

it does sound like you know the feelings that are causing you to [over]eat at night. i'm not really sure how knowing that you're lonely will stop you from eating, but it seems (from what others say and from what i've read) like recognizing the problem is important.

i realize it's been awhile since you posted, so i hope you've made progress with this issue.
