Curiosity...

Posted by Twin leaf on December 6, 2011, at 16:03:25

It seems that for about the last six months, Dr. Bob has not interacted with the board at all - no PBCs, no blocks and no expressed views. Maybe I missed it, but I have not seen any discussion about it. I am curious as to what people think. Is an unmoderated board optimal, or is a minimal, flexible degree of leadership preferable? Does anyone know what Bob's current views are? Is anyone in touch with him?

Just the message about what was wrong with babble for three days when site wouldn't work. I've seen blocked posters posts disappear when reported to admin so someone is minding the shop. I feel that we are doing a pretty good job of being supportive and friendly? Phillipa

There was a feeling among some posters that restraint, forbearance and (if necessary) silence were likely to have a better outcome.

That makes sense. Still, once such a major change had taken place, and there were no further changes, the near-total silence seems odd to me. I noticed that there was very little response when Bob made two friendly overtures - one about a get-together, and the other the millionth posting. Those seemed like two missed chances to get things on to a friendlier footing.

Yeah, I hadn't thought of it like that.

You may have a point.

I don't think I agree with you on this. Bob's interaction has indeed been scarce, but not too long ago there was an intervention when a blocked poster showed up under a *new* name and started being disruptive. And you're right - it's been a long, long time since I've seen a PBC. I cannot agree with "and no expressed views." Views are expressed on the boards every day. Lots of different types of views are expressed - with the exception of expressing views that include disparaging other people or people groups (i.e. psychiatrists, etc.) Just because views are expressed respectfully without resorting to rudeness doesn't mean views aren't being expressed.

I don't think it's entirely unmoderated, although I can see how it might seem that way compared to the more intensive moderation of the past. I think it's just minimal. And I do think that is preferable.

I was referring to the lack of expressed views by Bob, only. Most of the posts here do of course involve the sharing of both information and points of view.

My own preference would be for a slightly more active presence on Bob's part. The last six months have shown that the former extremely high level of control over the discourse is not at all necessary. The presence I would hope for would involve some implicit level of caring and leadership - an awareness that he is involved with us through Babble to a minimal extent- but would in no way involve any return to the previous administrative style.

I believe he said that long periods of time go by now during which he does not read the boards. If true, this is a greater degree of detachment than I would like to see.

Oh! Now I get it! I really did misunderstand what you were referring to. My apologies!
