My new 'smart' Imac won't let me chat unless...

Posted by Bobby on June 30, 2009, at 23:43:08

....I post a message and then change rooms---then come back to the previous room to read it. If anyone knows Steve Jobs--please have him send help. every single thing on the Imac has a different name and process(it seems) than WindowsXP---I hate that! It reminds me of "Press 1 for English." I can't even use my scanner correctly. do you have to be in some kind of bones and skull club to get directions?

You have kids?

If so, they'll know.

Good one! They're as new to it as I am. however, they're masters of other forms like windowsXP----at 8 and 12 years old! I suppose I owe it to myself to bite the bullet and attend the free class at the Apple store at the snooty mall----where ---if you want a drink of water ---you have to finance it with good credit.

My (((black macbook))) has the same issue (and has had for over a year now).

I've honed down the problem as being limited to Safari. I downloaded Camino as a backup browser and try and remember to use Camino in chat (nice to have a backup browser at any rate):

Bobby

I understand how you feel. i switched to IMAC 2 years ago.

Tell me your exact problem and I will attempt to help you solve it.
My daughter is a mac expert I can always enlist her help.

Until you get the hang of mac, download Firefox and chat through it. make it your default broswer.

You can babblemail me for more specifics. I would like to help you. I helped someone else here with their mac issues.

thanks for the offer----but my previous post pretty much sums it up. I post in rm 2 then go to rm 1-----then back to rm 2 to read it. all I know about Imacs is that they're suppose to be easy---but not! they're expensive and suppose to be way less likely to get a virus(though I'm never sure). In the music world---the upper level Jazz fans are known as "Jazz snobs." I don't want to become an "Apple snob." I just want to have a good pc that I can use without worrying about this or that worm/virus/ect... and can comprehend without contacting support every two seconds(which I've yet to do-----but will). Even the "self explanatory" stuff is like klingon talk to me---hey man----how about plain old English---without trying to impress me/yourself(not you) with your air of superiority! It's hard enough for old guys like me just to read the traffic signs. Thanks kindly for the offer---genuinely. At least there are people in the world who still are willing to give of themselves.

As someone said above, Firefox might solve your problem, it solved a lot of mine. I've found it the only browser to work right on my Mac.

All I knew were Macs until here recently when I began doing temp work at places that use PC's. So I've been experiencing the opposite of what you have! It was really difficult at first to get the hang of things (C drive, D drive, F drive, what the heck is that???). Especially at work where I'm trying to act like I know what I'm doing! So I think taking a class is an excellent idea, especially since you've already invested in a Mac. Once you get the hang of things, you may find yourself pleasantly surprised! Or, being human, you may always consider what you learned first the easiest. Anyway, all I'm trying to say is, if I could learn to use both, you can too. And then you'll know that much more than most people!

Bobby

When I first got my mac two years plus ago I needed firefox to do most of what I wanted to do.

Go ahead and load it for now and make it your default browser. It will ask you after you load it do you want to make it the default.

Then as you get more familiar with your mac you can play with Safari. Make sure all your software is up to date. Go to the apple log at the left top hand corner click on it and click on software updates. It is always good to have the update. You can also go to the Safari name and click on it and click on about safari it will tell you which version you have. Mine is 3.2.3 which is the lastest version.

Ok. chatting is just a little harder until you realize mac tries to think for you sometimes and makes it harder until you realize what is going on. Use Firefox chatting for now it will seem more familiar.

I finally deleted firefox and I haven't had any safari issues lately.

But you need to go to cache and empty it periodically and empty the cookies. If you need me to explain that I will. Here it is just in case,

click on safari and the 7th button down is empty cache. It will help your mac run faster. Then periodically go to safari click it click on preferences and where it says show cookies click on that. Then empty all or use the control button to highlight those you want to delete. Those you don't recognize. Too many can slow things down.

If you delete all it will delete your saved passwords.

If all else fails, restore safari and then update it. That should help you. Again if you continue to have problems I will join you in chat and walk you through it.
