When I first got my mac two years plus ago I needed firefox to do most of what I wanted to do.
Go ahead and load it for now and make it your default browser. It will ask you after you load it do you want to make it the default.
Then as you get more familiar with your mac you can play with Safari. Make sure all your software is up to date. Go to the apple log at the left top hand corner click on it and click on software updates. It is always good to have the update. You can also go to the Safari name and click on it and click on about safari it will tell you which version you have. Mine is 3.2.3 which is the lastest version.
Ok. chatting is just a little harder until you realize mac tries to think for you sometimes and makes it harder until you realize what is going on. Use Firefox chatting for now it will seem more familiar.
I finally deleted firefox and I haven't had any safari issues lately.
But you need to go to cache and empty it periodically and empty the cookies. If you need me to explain that I will. Here it is just in case,
click on safari and the 7th button down is empty cache. It will help your mac run faster. Then periodically go to safari click it click on preferences and where it says show cookies click on that. Then empty all or use the control button to highlight those you want to delete. Those you don't recognize. Too many can slow things down.
If you delete all it will delete your saved passwords.
If all else fails, restore safari and then update it. That should help you. Again if you continue to have problems I will join you in chat and walk you through it.
