These are our boards.

Posted by gardenergirl on March 10, 2008, at 22:37:14

These boards belong to us. They're ours. I'm not the first to express this. I hope I won't be the last. Either way, tonight, March 10, 2008 I stake our claim to these boards. (Inserts flagpole into virtual ground)

WE are the ones who breathe life into these boards.
WE make them what they are by expressing ourselves.
WE do this by
-asking for information, support, opinions, advice, resources, etc.
-offering information, support, opinions, advice, resources, etc.
-forming relationships with each other
-talking about ourselves, our lives, our loves, our fears, our needs, our dreams, our thoughts, our beliefs, our humanity
-"listening" to others' talking about themselves, their lives, loves, fears, needs, dreams, thoughts, beliefs, humanity
-coming together so that one can feel a little less alone
-laughing, crying, smiling, empathizing, supporting, chatting, grieving, cheering, questioning and being together
-standing up for each other
-checking in on each other
-doing what we can to make this feel safe for all
-taking what we need and leaving what we can...

And so much more.

This is OUR community. These are OUR boards.

That's a nice way to think about it. Unfortuantely, this is Bob's board and he rules it like a militant dictator. Don't believe that you have ANY say as to what goes on here. That's a fallacy that he might want you to believe.

Unfortunately if you don't have the knowledge to create an UltimateBB or typical modern boards, register with the cheapest registrar 1&1, and pay for massive MB (megabyte) traffic and email and perl and javascripting, this is roll-your-own a-la-Bob board.

Like it or not, the registrar is:

This is publicly available information on WHOIS, so no banning please. I also have my own domains like above for business purposes but I'm never going to reveal my true information here because its part of my private life. Maybe some day when things are better for me I'll write a book, but meanwhile I use an avatar, my board name. But that's a tangent.

My point is, I can sense the anger here and I have left the board at times because I felt it to be a fiefdom. I was banned for a week for triviality, I pretty much left for quite a while because my psychiatrist said it wasn't productive for me.

I've since returned and now I see the usual algebra formulas for banning someone for eternity.

1 year??

I can sense now the continuous spew running right now on Medication, minus the nasty and hurtful comments ad hominem about people specifically, reflects an underlying opinion.

People have a lot of DSM-IV conditions and I can understand the anger and frustration, and especially if you have an Axis II disorder or potent psychosis, its sometimes hard to always be "civil."

I feel there is a difference between saying sh*t and whatever because of personal problems where grace under fire has not kicked in yet, and ad hominem, patently schadenfreude (there is no English equivalent) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schadenfreude, and character assassination that they cross the border to not being "civil".

I do feel though that there should be a Uncivil forum, that nobody has to visit at all where people are banned and can all be filled with personality complexes until their banned state is exhausted.

Perhaps I'm being a little naive and silly though, but I think if not, there should be bidirectional babblemail enabled anyhow, with either that the banned person cannot communicate with the person they just character assasinated, or if a person receives such a babblemail, they can press a box to ban the babblemail from said person.

Anyhow these are my opinions and while I think we have also had a few tonguelashings at ourselves I can view what you are trying to say

*****As far as I know, anyone can start a group such as this on Yahoo free.

Just a simple one perhaps; not all the boards - or maybe you can even do that.

It was done years ago & I imagine it still can be.

yup, that's pretty much it
with some civility guidelines that you either tolerate or don't
maybe that sounds cold and simplistic, but whatdya gonna do?
"take what you like and leave the rest" has always made good sense to me
I would consider that perhaps I am simply indifferent to these issues that become such hot points, that I am simply not invested...

but that's not the case...
I have been here for YEARS
and I am not quite sure how that happened, so this place is important to me, but I also know this site has it's limitations...anyway, I'm not sure what I am trying to say, but you know I don't think this site = dr bob
I'm sure he could do other things with his time if he wanted to...so I am just glad he made this site
I have benefitted tremendously from the information and support shared here between thankfully very fallible people (what I like best about them btw ;-), and so I am thankful for every little bit of it

You're right, of course. Literally, they are Dr. Bob's boards. At least that's what I think all that info from WHOIS, a cool resource, meant. :)

Yeah, that's a really long time.

Too true. Especially if you are someone who says, "F*rt". Hmm, is there an eye rolling emoticon?

I agree.

Well, that could be an interesting board. I was thinking recently that maybe someone who is blocked could instead by significantly limited in posting...maybe to one post per day or a certain number per blocked week or something. And that privilege could then maybe be removed if they continue to post uncivil remarks.

Posters who are blocked aren't supposed to be able to send babblemails, so that should take care of the first scenario. I think the second is not unreasonable, especially if they could block one or more without having to turn Babblemail off entirely.

Thanks. I think we have, too, but I don't really remember them at the moment. I'm glad you came back.

you know, I think it is a good feeling

I often think that people are doing the best they can, given what they know at any particular moment

I think it's been a necessary perspective of mine. (so I can f*ck up and not hate myself, but believe me, I DO try ;-)

the thing is, I sort of decided a long time ago, that others are simply imperfect, and that perhaps their intentions are neither good or bad, but some complicated shade in between

and furthermore, most things have absolutely nothing to do with me, but perhaps I am affected just the same

this was no painless realization

eh...what can you do, but love people anyway ;-)
