OK I FREAKED??? Why this????

Posted by muffled on September 22, 2007, at 23:42:43

I was looking in archives and the post didn't come up when I clicked the link from the search, it came up with this:

The security certificate presented by this website was issued for a different website's address.

Security certificate problems may indicate an attempt to fool you or intercept any data you send to the server.

OK SO I AM FREAKING.

Did the URL have "https" (with the "s") in it? It doesn't need to if you're just reading posts.

The registration system uses https ("s" means "secure"), but then the address it uses is "dr-bob.securesites.com" and not "www.dr-bob.org".

I scared to go back.
But I wasn't in registration, I just looked up an old post thru the google search on Dr.Bob on the bottom of the page.
Thx.

I got my cookies blocked which means it always comes up w/all 'new' indicators, and I can't hide ads.
Is it OK to post or not?
I didn't notice url thing.
I won't search no more.
Maybe never allow cookies?, which kinda sucks cuz then its real hard to find new posts, cuz I don't use the notify followups much cuz it clogs up my e-mail.
I hope nothing is wrong :-(
But this hasn't happened to me before.

IMO, it's okay to post and to accept cookies, etc. Dr. Bob would have said not to, and turned off posting if it wasn't. This is not an uncommon occurence, depending on your browser and its settings. I think IE, IE7 for sure, tends to pop up that one more often, but I could be wrong. (I use Firefox)

I have gotten this message other times, not yet here, but on other sites. It is sort of a browser's way of alerting that the web address in the url of the page you are trying to get to at that moment doesn't exactly match the security certificate of the site - more a 'heads up' for the admin, really. Like it changes between http://dr-bob.org and www.dr-bob.org. - same place, slightly different way of accessing.

My understanding is that whenever you see this, as long as you don't continue on to the site/page (which should actually be okay - just viewing) AND then give it personal info about yourself (like filling in a form) you are fine, even if someone is trying to do something....rarely the case.

Gosh, I've probably made the mud muddier. Please someone correct my misstatements and say this a better way. I understand it's not a big deal, but I don't know the right technical words to describe why.....

This has happened to me on certain archive posts, and I freaked out too. I know at least one other person has had the same experience as well. I'm sure it's safe to post. I've viewed those posts and had no problems.

Did Dr. Bob change servers or web addresses in the past?

**OK I looked at google, and those posts DO have https in front of them.
So its only those posts.
Is there a reason WHY those posts are like that?
And can it be changed?
I would like to NOT have that thing pop up if possible.
Is there something I can set in my security thing that would make it not happen yet still be safe?
I thot I had all of Dr,Bob cookies already allowed(I have deleted at present)?
I am still concerned about this.
Thanks you babblers for your reassurances.

Yup, one of Racer's old posts from 2005. That's the same message that I got in the past too. At the I did wonder if it was a scheme of Dr. Bob's to see who was snooping around the archives, but it probably has an innocent explanation, like the old posts being on a different server or something as gg suggests.

It has to do with the URL, not with the post itself. To read the post without the pop-up, just leave out the "s":

Why is it listed in Google that way? I guess because that's how it appears somewhere online?

**Aggghhhhh! HOW to word this?
Why do some posts come up differently and therefore prompt the warning?
Why would it appear (somewhere????) online like that?
Are the posts not comming from babble? WHO would change the URL's?('uniform' resource locator).
Arrgggh. Bob, you do a flip, quick 1 line answer. I was asking the question cuz I am concerned, that was not much of an answer, no offense intended, but really that is how i feel. My concerns flipped off...
Whatever.
Have fun playing w/your computer stuff.

It would appear like that if someone entered it like that. Like you yourself did above... Maybe it was someone really concerned about security? But I'm not sure what the security issue would be if someone's just reading posts. Usually https is used for information like credit card numbers.

Is there something in particular you're concerned about?

*I cut and pasted the URL...
Do people manually enter it? Its not just automatically done by computer?
Maybe it was SOMEone really interested in security? But WHO?
What I am concerned about is the original security message said someone might be trying to get personal info from me.
I am naturally a little paranoid after the hacking here.
So *why* I am concerned, is cuz there is a discrepancy in the url's and I dunno why this would be so, unless someone specifically went to do so, and if they did, WHY?
There's a saying; 'know your enemies'. I am just trying to keep it safe. There were some indicators of trouble, seemingly benign, b4 the hacking. And Maybe the hacking wasn't a big deal to some, but it was a big deal to me.
Thanks for your more than 1 line reply. I hope you can have some understanding as to where I am comming from.
I guess i'm not very good at explaining things.

That makes sense. And the warning's there for a reason. So I'm glad you checked it out. In this case it did check out. But it might not next time, so do be careful.
