Dr. Bob, your BMI calculator made me cry

Posted by Dinah on March 23, 2006, at 17:33:48

aren't there less judgemental descriptors?

And if you don't mind my asking, is a link on the Politics board appropriate? Wouldn't Heath or Social be better?

Given what it said to me, I think it deserves a PBC.

Sorry, but I think those are standard...

I'm confused, there's a link to the BMI Calculator there?

Bob

Yep.

Along with a link to Tips.

In the opening paragraphs.

It might be standard, but I'm sure you're creative enough to change the descriptor to something that sounds more caringly concerned rather than frowningly judging.

Thanks, you're right, that didn't make any sense! I've moved it to Health. Psycho-Babble Tips is a more general resource, though, so I think I'd rather leave it.

I suppose there could be both, would you be willing to suggest better alternatives?

How about:

>35: Danger zone
30 -- 35: Chubby
25 -- 30: Plump

17 -- 19: Too thin
<17: Anorexic

Or maybe something like that?

Personally, though, I think the BMI calculator should get a permanent PBC. Maybe put it on probation?

Or not...

Yes, that'd be better.

Or something based solely on health.

Like "Scores between xxx and yyy are associated with higher rates of whatever they're associated with. Using diet and exercise to bring your BMI between aaaa and bbbb have been shown to have whatever benefits they're associated with bringing." Or "congratulations, your BMI results are considered ideal for your health, but of course continue to get your regular checkups."

Totally consequences oriented with no nasty little labels.

But Dr. Bob, could I ask if there's a reason for them on Babble? Are you trying to find a correlation between mental health board participation and BMI? Or internet useage and lack of exercise?

I think that sounds much much better.
I don't use that but... Jeepers...

I don't think adopting standard terminology excuses incivility does it?

I mean... That doesn't cut it over on politics or faith...

I could add something like that. But "anorexic" and "danger zone" are too much like a diagnosis and a prognosis...

That would be fine, too. You don't happen to know what to plug in for those variables, do you?

One's BMI can be relevant to one's health?

I know, conflicting psychopathologies, but I really like having it here...

I can't find the insulting labels in that thing. I put in extreme weights and all I could get were "underweight" and "severely obese". I always thought "obese" was the most medical-sounding and least judgemental word for fat, and "underweight" doesn't register as an insult either.

me, too. hee hee. :) (nm) » Gabbix2

> I always thought "obese" was the most medical-sounding and least judgemental word for fat,

ah.

but then if it is a common stand in then it starts to inherit the connotations of the word it was supposed to replace

:-(

how about 'optimum weight'

and then a gradation of

over

significantly over

or whatever.

and same with the other end.

that is...

if there really aren't any non-judgemental sounding stand ins.

aren't there any fairly commonly knows bits that could go in the x and y?

unfortunately i neglected to apply to med school too...
