Hi Dinah, In the middle of the storm I have a simple question. If you want someone to have your email address, but do not want to post it on the board, how do you go about it? I once got an email from someone on the board [which was fine] but did not give her my email address. thanks for any answer. terrics

A lot of people set up free yahoo or hotmail accounts like terricsbabble. You can give that one out (and change it as necessary) and then either use it for Babble correspondence or give people your "real" email address once they contact you there.
In the past, people have also used me as a go between. My email's in the FAQ.
I'm not sure how anyone on the board would have gotten your email address unless you gave it out, or unless it was one you used to sign up at Yahoo Open.

That's the odd thing about Open - despite the fact that my Yahoo profile is set up to have my email address PRIVATE, when I go to the Babble Open Yahoo member listing, it does display my email address.
So, if you enroll in Open, your email address IS displayed. I just tried going to my membership for the Babble Open group to see if I could change a setting just for the group, but there does appear to be a way to do that at my level as a use.
Dr. Bob - is this mandatory in some setting for how you created Open? If so, would you consider changing it? We don't need to see each other's email addresses. We give them out when we want to. I hate to have to create yet another ID just for Open.
Thanks.

Your profile at Yahoo! does not show your e-mail address when I clicked on it this a.m. Only the members pages in Open show addresses and even then they are 'slightly' hidden.
> So, if you enroll in Open, your email address IS displayed. I just tried going to my membership for the Babble Open group to see if I could change a setting just for the group, but there does appear to be a way to do that at my level as a use.
When you enroll in Open your listing in the member pages includes your Yahoo! Profile (your ID), your e-mail, and date joined.Your full address (fake for demonstration purposes): tofuemmy at babblermail dot com isn't shown to anyone but you when you are signed in. When I'm signed in I see: tofuemmy at b........ and that is all. Only the first letter after the at symbol is visible to other members of Open.
When I'm signed in to Open and looking at the member pages for my listing it reads: zenhussy at babblermail dot com. Other members would only see: zenhussy at b..........
Make sense? I know it isn't that private but unless you're using an extremely common domain then most people wouldn't be able to guess. I think it is fairly usual that babbler at y.... would be yahoo. However not always the case.
So, not foolproof but good 'nuff for Dr. Bob and Yahoo!'s standards it would appear.

ZH - You are OH so wise! Yes, only the left part of the address shows. In my case, since I've already published my email address here a few times, we can use it for demo purposes.
When we sign on to Open, and view the Members list, it displays my email address as "EmilySimon2003 at Y...."
So, indeed the full address is NOT listed. My bad. I forgot about that. HOWEVER!! If I thought no one would know my name is Emily Simon, I'd be wrong. The Babble world would know that now. Surprise!!! I know it came as a shock to me when I first saw that out there. I had no clue that would happen.
Also, anyone can send email to that name, regardless of the fact that the domain name is hidden.
What is GOOOD is that Yahoo must prevent these ids from getting spam since I never get spam at that address.
My preference remains; if it is possible for Bob to change and administrative setting such that these addresses are NOT public, that would be a good thing.

It turns out there is now an option:
> Allow members to hide their email address from the group.
> Your group will not be able to use the Polls feature.
> Members who hide their email address will not be able to post messages via email. Is "posting messages via email" important?

Emmy,
If you want your email address off right now you can do it yourself. Many people have set up a yahoo email address just for open. You might be able to switch your registration at open to the new address - I don't know. What you can do is unjoin the group and then rejoin it with your new email address. Everyone will guess that everyone@y.... is a yahoo address but you don't ever need to read the mail there - just sign in every few months.Jane

> BobIn my opinion, hiding email addresses is a good thing. For folks who sign up for Open and simply type in their normal email address, they probably don't expect it to be displayed. Yes, there are ways around it, but why trouble people, especially those who are not PC savvy?
Since I don't think anyone uses the poll features, my vote is to turn off the display of email addresses. But that's just my opinion.
Thank you for taking the time to look into this, Dr. Bob.

> Bob<<<<< (This is probably a "Duh," but "Posting messages via email" is just sending an email through the Yahoo members list... I found that out after being terrified for awhile, when I had sent someone an email by clicking on their address there and I received a confirmation saying "Your message has been posted..." I thought it had indeed been posted-posted somewhere!)
Dr. Bob, another confidentiality option that doesn't seem to be operational (though this one claims it is) is the option to be "Hidden" in Open. I tried that twice, just to see what Open was like but not having any intention of participating yet. But sure enough, I wasn't hidden (and I'm very sure I did it right). Just an FYI, because you might want to either turn the feature on or remove it. I'd think many people may be shy or unfamiliar with chat, and may try to get their feet wet that way and be surprised. (Myself, I can't even type and I spend enough time online as it is, so I probably won't follow through on Open.)
Terrics, another option for giving out your email address is the free addy encrypting service sneakemail.com (or others like it). It forwards email to your real address, and you can generate and delete the encrypted addresses at will. You could even give a different one out to each person, then delete it immediately as soon as they've contacted you and you have their address. I posted a big hairy description of sneakemail.com on Admin a couple months ago, and Lonely Girl very recently linked someone to it here on Admin too. Let me know if you want me to find it.

Well, considering that you have the group set so that only the moderators can post messages anyway, it's kind of a moot point.
This is the end of the thread.
