This is from the FAQs, and indeed I somehow unflagged my flags, having nothing to do with switching computers. I did have one of my typical freeze/reboots, but that has happened many times without my flags getting lost. I also cleared cookies through Internet Options earlier, but thought I had done that too without losing flags. Clearing "accidental" cookies is routine maintenance so I hope that doesn't happen every time. Anyway I want to try the below, but don't know where it is:
" This site flags for you with the messages that have been posted since the last time you visited (from that computer) (if your browser does Javascript and "cookies"). This way, you don't have to scrutinize the listing as closely to tell what's new. If you reload the main page and reset the "new" indicators by mistake, you can undo that by clicking the "previous indicators" button. "

When you click on a specific board, such as admin, or social, if you scroll down right before the posts start, and under music and right beside Date of last visit, you'll find a grey button that says "Previous Indicators" or something similar to that. Then there is a line that seperates the page and the fun begins with posts... Hope that helps spoc. It comes in handy if you close out the screen and lose your place :)

Aren't we the ones who came down on the side of "not (always) necessary?" But I can be a wimp. Anyway, thanks, d'oh, I do see that previous indicators box now. What I was trying to do was get the links I had already read to turn a different color again, thinking that they usually stayed a diff color even through crashes, reboots, cookie cleanses and site reloads. But maybe I'm remembering wrong about that -- I have DSL so perhaps I was just continuously online longer than I thought and that's why the links were staying nice and color coded for me! But *if* it actually can/should work that way (links remaining a diff color forever once read), please let me know. That is so much easier than even flags just denoting what's new on the entire page... If I have guessed that function right even... : )

Not necessarily crashes, I don't think, since they can really mess things up.

Maybe if you read everything. If you don't, old posts that you didn't read would be the same color as new ones. Also, I don't think links usually turn a different color forever, just for a while.

Why is it the simple stuff sometimes.....? ;- )
Can't process the above, because it seems to me that if everything I've already read is green and the rest is blue -- whether an old/unread item or a new/unread item, that's easier. Not that my permanently-colored link dream appears to be possible from what you said but I am just trying, for sport I guess, to absorb why it would be that diff colored links would only make it easier if I had read the whole page. Until a recent crash, I could see at a glance everywhere I'd been, and I guess it spoiled me. <sniff sniff> Thanks tho! : )-----

...If you have two or more IE browser windows open with the boards here, there will only be a "previous indicator" button appearing on one of them. Guess that makes sense. I see now that's why I couldn't find it before!
(I have Win 98 SE and AOL, and often open IE browsers separately because it generally works better everywhere. There *will* be previous indicator buttons on both the board open at AOL and at one of the IE browsers, just not on both IE browsers if I have two open. No idea why that could be useful data for you Dr. Bob but ya never know!)

In regard to the following, I just noticed that since the crash/reboot/whatever that turned all my viewed post links the same color again, certain other things that I haven't clicked on since HAVE remained a different color from weeks or days ago. Like board info and policy stuff I have read only once many moons ago (anti-addiction, music, privacy, etc.) and links to other PB boards I haven't visited in days. Maybe it's some random mess-up caused by crashes, as you kinda said. I know that when web surfing in general I sometimes see differently colored links from something I read (or must have read) months ago, and meanwhile this beast was crashing at least several times a week.

the colour of hyperlinks is determined as follows:
* before a page loads, your computer looks at your hard drive to see if any of the linked pages are there
* if so, the links are given the "previously read" colourif your computer crashes, your hard drive may not necessarily be up to date. your browser cache (which is temporary storage of internet pages on your hard drive) may be corrupt and/or the index of the cache may not be correct. this is not a huge problem, but it will cause hyperlinks to be displayed as "unread" when they are really "read".
also, if you explicitly clear your browser cache, previously read pages would appear as unread. (to clear your cache in Internet Explorer, you would click Tools->Internet Options, then click "Delete Files".)
i hope this makes sense (and i'm pretty sure it's technically correct)

Hi all, thanks! But I'm realizing that progressively, this beast is just giving out. I think all the freezing and crashing is indeed just "selectively" knocking things out. I am having links stay (or not stay) a different color all over "my" Internet, very much at random (btw, cookie/temp cleaning has never removed them *all,* which I liked). BUT hyperlink coloring is not serious of course. Wish that was all I meant! Was told a long time ago that this PC is only good anymore for basic Internet, email and word processing. It's beyond any result from defrag even. And wow is it unpredictable and nasty lately! Anyway no rhyme or reason to much of what goes on with it. But thanks!!!!! : )

If you had read everything before, then you could pick out the new items by color, they would be the blue ones.
But if you hadn't read everything before, then the old/unread items would also be blue, so you couldn't just go by color.
Right?

Yes (or so I think as of this writing! Several new posts may appear under this no matter how sure I am that I have exhausted all my curiosity!). Anyway, I think with my apparent Internet addiction (and a bit of OCD) I'm probably more concerned with avoiding the already-read than I am with finding the new! So a perfect PB world would be one where all previously-read links stayed a diff color; old/unread ones were the default color; and new/unread ones were too but had flags on them.On my elderly PC, I have noticed as I mentioned that *some* hyperlinks in *some* parts of *some* places I go when online do indeed stay a different color, despite intervening temp file removals. So I've concluded that this randomness must be caused by the crashing and slow death of my old friend here. After I first posted the coloration question I indeed noticed that several areas on PB had stayed color coded for me, including posts, while others lost it. May have been related to which board I had open when that particular freeze and crash came?
Anyway no biggie of course, there's just a lot of stuff to scroll through here so every little bit helps! Color coding helps me keep my eyes on the road! Anyway thanks again! : )

That's actually how it's supposed to work! Except that previously-read links only stay a different color for a while...
