Reading through the literature, apparently bupropion has less likelihood of inducing rapid cycling / mania than SSRI's (in those with bipolar).
Does anyone have experience in this regard?

I've been taking Wellbutrin SR for a while now. first 200mgs/day, now 400mgs/day.
Its been good to me. My mood is better, I can concentrate better, and I don't have as many mini-dips into low mood. Also, although wellbutrin is somewhat stimulating, its also helped take the edge off some anxiety that I guess was related to depression (?) and hadn't been treated by my other meds.
Probably most important...I don't feel apathetic and stimulated at the same time, which is how some SSRI+SNRI drugs made me feel. Before Wellbutrin, Tofranil had been one of the few drugs that could elevate my mood effectively w/o too much apathy...but the side effects were a bit much and my pdoc didn't want me on a tca, so...yeah...wellbutrin sr.

> LinkadgeThis is true. One of my doctors, Baron Shopsin, discovered this in the early 1980s. For awhile, he actually thought it might act as a mood stabilizer. Adding Lamictal to Wellbutrin can be particularly good for depression and will help prevent rapid cycling. For difficult cases of ultra rapid cycling, Lamictal can take up to 6 months to penetrate the cycle.

Hmm. Interesting.
I heard one page theorize that the enhancement of dopamine in the prefrontal cortex was improving executive control and hence mood stability (?)
I know that wellbutrin has some significant anti-inflammatory effects. I wonder if this is related? Also, I wonder if the interaction with nicotinergic receptors, has some effect on bipolar?
Wellbutrin is one med that I haven't taken, but I am interested in it since other antidepressants may be increasing mood fluctuations in me.
I am feeling better since starting lithium, and am wondering if I would be better to pursue a more bipolar route in the future.

Wellbutrin caused me significant anxiety at start up, so I aborted second trial.... I don't know about stability since I haven't taken it since my bipolar dx. The first time, years ago, I experienced definite mental focus (I have add pi).
Lamotrigine helps my rapid cycling, anxious mood fluctuations.

i don't have the source with me, but it seemed a long time ago i was googling how bupropion worked, saying that it blocked the reuptake of NE and some DA but it prevented the release of it.......so it's like a stable dopamine and NE in the nueroal synapse, not alot releasing but it's being in stable flow
ill have to look that up, i just rerember reading that somwhere long time ago......also why they use it to stop smoking too because it blocks the pleasurable effects of smoking

I have been on 300 mg of Wellbutrin for over a year now and never once become manic.
