First day on MAOI - heart rate?

Posted by yellowbird01 on June 7, 2012, at 23:27:31

Hi everyone..
I took my first dose of Nardil this morning. First MAOI I've taken. I work in a health facility so I had access to a blood pressure cuff/heart monitor today, and checked myself several times. My blood pressure was normal.. averaging about 100/65. My heart rate however was MUCH higher than normal. Average is about 80-85bpm for me. Today, it ranged from 118 in the afternoon to 101 at the lowest point tonight. Average about 110. I called my psychiatrist who said this was normal and not to worry about it, it might go away. It doesnt feel normal. Any thoughts? Should I be concerned about this? Or just give it awhile and see if it works out? I havent seen increased heart rate as a side effect of this med on anything I've read.

I've had increased heartbeat on Maois, but usually only if I eat something on the list of questionable foods or had a minor drug interaction. Do you take any other drugs with the Maois? generally, when this happens, taking off the patch ends it-- What dose did you start with and what maoi are you using?

Is your heart rhythm stable, or are you skipping beats, or having periods of slowing down/speeding up, or a lot of variations in rhythm? I guess there are a lot of variables. But if your doctor says it's not a problem, I would wait a few days and see if it goes back to normal. Also of course make sure you're being careful about foods and other meds-- because at the beginning, it's easy to forget something.

If you don't want to answer online, these are at least when I look into when my heartbeat gets too fast, or uneven.

Thanks for your response. I'm taking Nardil 15mg right now, moving to 30mg next week. I'm short/thin and tend to be affected strongly by medications. I'm not taking anything else except loratadine, which dr (and drugs.com) said is okay... anyone had bad experiences with that mix? I also have xanax prn but havent taken it since starting Nardil.

For the last 2-3 years, I've felt like my heart rhytym was slightly uneven at times.. slowing/speeding up, etc.. I've had 2 EKGs and they say everything is fine. I havent noticed that in particular since beginning this drug though.

Today is somewhat better. My heart rate has been 95-100 all day. BP has averaged about 105/65. My normal BP is slightly lower, but I'm obviosuly not worried about 105/65. Today I have felt very "spacy" and "drugged" though, which I didnt feel yesterday. I'm hopeful pdoc was right and this heart rate increase will work itself out. We'll see what tomorrow brings...

I was on Marplan for 7yrs and am currently just starting Parnate. I had an issue w high blood pressure on Marplan which I later found out was due to taking it w lithum (I guess some people can do it but it caused a reaction in me). Never once was I concerned about my pulse. Don't think I ever paid any attention to it tbh but my bp got yo 210/110 on a few occasions! (And I'm in.my 30s 6' 200lbs).

If you have access to a cuff it's for blood pressure. That's the important part. That can mess you up. Slightly elevated pulse prob happens all the time starting things. Would you have checked it if the maoihypertensive crisis wasn't. Possibility? Prob not right unless you felt chest pressure. I'd try not to obsess over numbers like that. These meds take time to settle in.....whats released and then the changes that come from that to balance everything.

I know what you mean about a bit spacey/stoned though. Been going through that myself (one week on Parnate today after a week off of Marplan). Overall mood is really good but difficult to stay on one task at times I know it'll settle in.....

If your pulse is a real concern perhaps propranolol would be an option? You may just be anxious about it. Pretty sure a beta blocker like propranolol would bring your pulse down. Or maybe some gym time on the bike would help after.....

I'm glad you did because I just got a Marplan Rx AND my insurance is covering it!

Aside from the heartrate (or BP) problem you experienced how did you like the drug? Parnate makes me a little too speedy and nervous, along with some other issues.

-Did you have the daytime sedation common with MAOI's?
-How did it handle your social anxiety?
-Did you find yourself apathetic or detached?
-What dose did you find effective?
-Did you switch from another MAOI?

Cheers and I look forward to hearing your experiences!
