new pdoc prescribed ketamine

Posted by poser938 on March 26, 2012, at 10:00:40

i just left his office, and he prescribed ketamine. he costs like 3 times as much as my past psychiatrist for appointments, but he has a much better way about doing things. he is still telling me i am irrational for thinking I've had longterm/permanent effects from past meds, just like other psychiatrists have said... but hopefully we can still work well together so that i can get to feeling better.

now, with the ketamine.. i haven't filled it yet. it might very well help me.. but I'm nervous. i read a bit about it maybe being a dopamine partial agonist, or working very lightly to stimulate dopamine receptors. this part might be bad for me considering my chronic dopamine agonist withdrawal. i am considering taking a moderately high dose of seroquel with it. i'm not sure yet though. I'm on public internet service right now (Best Buy) and I'm going to read more in to it.

I'd say follow your new pdocs directions and don't add anything on own without him knowing. Report back okay? Let us know how and what you decide. Congrats on the ketamine. Phillipa

I agree with Phillipa. Take what the doctor prescribed, see how that does THEN if need be talk to him about adding stuff. If your already thinking of adding stuff your not even going to give the medication a proper run, and you got a once in a life time chance trying this medication, take advantage of it and do it properly. Good luck man

Good luck to you! Is it in pill form?

i know it would usually be best to follow the doctors orders. and i will take it exactly as prescribed. but, he didnt even believe me about the chronic dopamine agonist withdrawal i have. which i have and have had for 2 years. and with my experience with taking a single dose of ritalin after the mirapex messed me up, further unnatural dopamine stimulation could really be bad for my mental health. i would LOVE to be able to try meds and not worry about them possibly affecting me long term. my dopamine system is in such a funk that i cant even feel any effects from antipsychotics like risperdal or seroquel.

but psychiatrists choose to believe that my emotions just coincidentally went blank while i was on mirapex. or that my hair coincidentally started falling out twice as fast while i was on effexor a few years ago, and my hair still does it today. i have an atypical brain that doesnt revert back to normal after stopping meds.

no, it's a nasal spray.

this new psychiatrist said he's pretty sure he's the only doc in Tennessee that prescribes it. pretty cool that it was just right next door to the psychiatrist i had been going to.

Do you know how much ketamine is in a single spray?

My pdoc has also mentioned that he'd like me to consider ketamine. I've been on many meds over the last 2 years and none have worked. Ketamine is supposed to work wonders and pull people out of depression quickly. I'm leery to take ketamine though because it's not FDA approved for depression and it is still in the stages of clinical trials. Please let me know what your experience with ketamine is. My pdoc doesn't prescribe it but wants me to travel about 1 hour to another colleaque of his that does prescibe. I was also under the impression that it had to be take intravenuously.

Hi jerseygal111. I'm looking for a pdoc near NYC who will prescribe ketamine. Any chance that the one you mentioned is near New York city? If so would you mind passing along his/her name? I'd appreciate it tremendously.

Who is your doc and where? I've had LONG bouts of treatment resistant major depression( ECT was ONLY thing to really help, but would only work for 2 days, then stop working. did ECT over 50 times while doc kept trying out new psych meds, so i could stop ECT. Cymbalta is actually what worked and I was finally able to stop ECT. Worried about Cymbalta poop out b/c i've been on it a year and have never had a med last more than a year. I had heard about only ONE psychiatrist at UC San Diego I think, who perscribes ketamine. I also heard it really only works for major depression, in IV form, not that well in pill form, but who knows?? curious what city your psychiatrist is in who perscribed it and if it's helping you??? thanks!

Cymbalta 90mg was ONLY dose AND med to get me out of horrid 14 month bout of depression and so I could stop ECT. The psychiatrist that put me on cymbalta was known by other local psychiatrists for getting med or med cocktail right, quickly for people in the most severe/longest bouts of depression,,,one was in a 10 year bout. Psychiatrist said his go to drug for major depression was cymbalta and most people need 90mg to instantly get out of depressed bout(max dose), some only 60mg. Recently did neurotransmitter testing, still felt good and all levels tested were in the normal high range, but serotonin flagged low at 82...supposed to be between 125-135(around there). More proof that I had been settling for better than misery vs really good! Doc just put me on this SAM-E powder and a neurotransmitter balance spray( made by cool company:www.neuroscienceinc.com
