I found this interesting:

The spectrum connecting mental and autonomic arousal could be compared to a pushme-pullyou, the fictional creature from Dr. Dolittle with two front ends and two brains. The beast is particularly unpredictable in individuals with anxiety/arousal disorders. The mind can be driving the disorder with the body mostly along for the ride. Or the body can be driving the disorder, with the mind doing its best to resist. Treatment of the mind can accomplish surprising effects on biology, but this is compensation, and it does have its limits. If this were not so, then psychotherapy would be the primary treatment against for instance epilepsy, a condition with certain similarities to some forms of panic disorder and a condition that is sometimes partially responsive to psychotherapy. So a good understanding of the mind-body connection in panic disorder generally and in any specific patient is essential to intelligent diagnosis and effective treatment. Notwithstanding the mind-body overlap, the essence of each case is usually to be found in some intrinsic factor on one side or the other.

I really wrestle with anxiety. Later the link discusses various dysautonomia which I find curious since I have had regulatory issuses since childhood.

Btw, are you still setting sail soon?

For me, "benzodiazepine" has never been a dirty word. In my experience, they are incredibly useful drugs with a favorable safety and side effect profile. Dependence? So what? If you need it long-term, what's the difference? There are a few methods to ease withdrawal if that becomes necessary. Using an anticonvulsant like Trileptal is one strategy.

One disadvantage of BZDs is that a minority of people will become addicted to them and experience cravings and a psychological compulsion. This involves a biological substrate that promotes addiction. In addition, some people will experience behavioral disinhibition.

Have you considered Nardil or a tricyclic?

I never tried a tricyclic. My pdoc suggested tofranil.Ive been able to do well on klonopin with minimal side effects.I have had issues with accepting its daily use, however.I will write down trileptal and request it should I eventually decide to taper k(if I have problems tapering, which I will!)

do you mean you are experiencing more worry/anxiety? That concerns me, that I will take for years, then they poop out.But isnt that a risk with the other drugs as well?Did your pdoc ever suggest the tricyclics? Mine said that her panic pts do well on tofranil, but Im afraid of the side effects. She also once suggested I try a small dose of seroquel,I was too anxious to try it!

Abstract

OBJECTIVE:

This study aims at evaluating the tolerability and efficacy of the antiepileptic drug oxcarbazepine in benzodiazepine detoxification in ten patients.

METHODS:

In this case study of an inpatient withdrawal program, each of the ten patients was detoxified using oxcarbazepine and completed withdrawal successfully without the occurrence of withdrawal symptoms. The detoxification program followed an outlined dosage scheme with oxcarbazepine increase and benzodiazepine tapering.

RESULTS:

The rapidity of benzodiazepine detoxification using oxcarbazepine was remarkable, benzodiazepine withdrawal being completed in as little as 11 days.

CONCLUSIONS:

The results support the assumption that oxcarbazepine is a valuable drug for inpatient benzodiazepine withdrawal programs.

I always think of tapering, even when it works.I have issues w/taking pills everyday, and the controversy surrounding benzos makes it esp. hard on me.So far,I have stuck w/it.K has been wonderful and no problems.I think the problems will begin if I taper. My mother has always hated pills and that's where I get it from.
