Neuroleptic-Induced Deficit Syndrome (NIDS)

Posted by Christ_empowered on September 13, 2010, at 3:52:51

OK, so we all know that with the old antipsychotics, high doses=Thorazine-d into oblivion. The question I have: does it happen with the newer, "atypical" antipsychotics? As someone who takes 30mgs/day of Abilify, I'm a bit worried. Would I know if I had NIDS?

If you had NIDS, you wouldn't have the interest, motivation, or energy to do anything. You would have flat affect, anhedonia, anergia, and be virtually catatonic. I doubt you would have the mental resources to post on Psycho-Babble. Abilify might be the AP least likely to cause deficit syndrome, perhaps because it is a partial agonist at dopamine D2 and D3 receptors.

I think the newer APs can definately induce a deficit syndrome. I think risperdal is the worst in this regard, followed by olanzapine then seroquel.

From what I am gathering, abilify seems to cause a *lot* more severe akathesia than they would like to let on to.

I had a lot of deficit on olanzapine. It *kind* of improved my mood in some ways, yet worsened it in other ways at the same time.

Certainly, we have seen enough of this phenomenon on Psycho-Babble. However, more people seem to experience a sort of restlessness or agitation as a startup side effect that often disappears within a week or two. It looks much like a mild form of akathisia. I'm not sure that it is true akathisia, though.

I don't know if I'd consider it mild. Doing a quick google serach on abilify reviews, it seems that extreme restlessness is pretty much the main reason people stop taking abilify.

I don't doubt that this could be the main reason for discontinuation. However, I would be curious to know what is the percentage of those who continue treatment with Abilify that experience a milder self-limiting akathisia-like syndrome. I have seen this occur in others and witnessed it in myself. In fact, I am currently following someone who has just started taking Abilify 5mg last week. So far, the pattern of akathisia-like side effects that she is experiencing resembles the mild form, and are currently dissipating.

Well, as always, it probably depends on the user.

I had severe akathesia on paxil 20mg, whereas others can take it with no problem.

I have no doubt that for some, abilify causes mild akathesia, but for others it can be severe.

Like you said, we need more numbers, I just think that the package insert numbers are probably a bit underestimated.

I recently read that the newer ap's are no better than then the older antipsychotics. Wonder is akathesia is the cause of the start up anxiety of SSRI's? Phillipa

Some researchers believe that it is the occurrence of akathisia that produces an increased risk of suicide with SSRIs.

Like you say, I don't think that the occurrence of akathisia with Abiify is fully appreciated, despite all the years doctors have been working with it.
