Hi,
I am considering giving this a try, and I was wondering if anyone knew the recommended dosage for this supplement? I am 200 lb-ish male in his mid-twenties.
Also, does anyone know a particular brand that I can be ensured will provide a quality product? Bonus points if you can tell me where to buy it at a discount or cheap online. =)

I haven't tried SAM-e, but usually buy supplements from iherb.com. They've got good prices, cheap shipping (I've paid under $2 for very small orders), and are pretty fast. They have lots of reviews so you can compare what people say about the different brands.
You might also want to do a search here at psychobabble for a related supplement called TMG (maybe also type in "poster:Larry Hoover" because I think he wrote quite a bit about it). Might be a cheaper alternative to SAM-e.

Dosage can vary anywhere from 50mg per day to 1600mg per day. Despite claims that if you cut pills they will be destroyed in the stomach before absorbed, that is not true. I have tried multiple times and it is definitely felt.
Casually people usually start at 200mg per day and increase if needed by intuition or feel. It can be purchased in 200mg pills or 400mg pills.
A typical scenario involves rapid response...first day to third day...then a mellowing of the good effect, maybe a disappearance of it, followed by a gradual improvement over weeks.
Clinically they usually go straight to the 800mg to 1600mg range. A hospital in Boston tested it as augmentation in a small group of Lexapro users. Positive response, no untoward reactions, 1600mg dose.
Like anything else, mileage varies. Can be on the stimulating side at first so keep that in mind. A clue of too high of a dose is agitation, irritation, insomnia.
It can be dosed daily, every other day, or whatever as-needed schedule works best. Clinically it is dosed daily. Some people use it only when they need it.
A top brand is Nature's Way. Last time I looked into it, it was available at Rite-Aid. I don't know if it still is.
I'll have to pass on the bonus points because I don't know the cheapest places to buy it, except I've heard Sam's Club is the most affordable. I someone is doing 8 pills a day (1600mg) it won't be cheap no matter what. Or 4 pills a day (400mg each). But as we all know, when it comes to defeating the monster, the cash cost of doing that is a worthy price to pay.

My pdoc recommended SamE to me last year - he specifically said to use NatureMade. I took 200 mg a day and that was plenty. For 3 months I felt better than I think I have ever felt. I was social, confident, creative, funny, etc. with no nasty side effects. Then suddenly - nothing. I upped the dose several times - nothing. At a certain point, I started feeling a lot of anxiety, so I just gave up. I've never found anything else that worked like SamE - sigh. Good luck!

Man, that's disappointing, Tanner. I haven't even tried it and thats disappointing. You'd think something "natural" (I know it's technically synthetic but works via a natural mechanism) would work indefinitely.
The more I read the more I seem to get the feeling that every medication eventually "poops out". Am I naive to hope for something that will work in perpetuity?

Ah! I made a mistake. In my post I said the brand to buy is Nature's Way. Brain fog. That's not what I meant. The brand you want is NatureMade. Sorry for the mistake. NatureMade is the one.
A way to prevent SAMe poopout is to rotate it...stop it for a week every month, weekend holidays, whatever schedule is tolerable. Don't allow the drug and the genes enough time or enough stability to figure out what you are doing.

I took a 200 mg. tab / 2x daily for over a year without effect. (I think that was the dosage. I took whatever the instructions on the box said to take.) Years later, a Shrink told me that it might have been effective if I took 3X the recommended dose. That would have been $120/mo.
Nature Made is a reliable brand. It was the only one that was out there before Newsweek made SAM-e famous with a cover story in the late '90s and all the pill companies got on the band wagon.
