If trazadone causes me to wake up depressed should I take it? I find that even though I take for sleep, I wake up feeling dog tired. My dreams, although I cannot remember them, must be depressing b/c sometimes i wake up crying. This is strange to me. Does anyone have similar experiences? It's a case of is it the chicken or the egg: is it the med or a symptom of something else?
Thanks.
I also take Atenolol 50mg and Ritalin 10gm tid.
trazadone is taken 100mg 1-2 times per night as needed

kiss my rear end. I am stopping for good. Wow, I sound like an addict. I am making a committment for the world to witness that I am no longer using this drug because the side effect profile sucks. There's a reason that I keep tossing it out. There's a reason that I have always questioned it's efficacy.
Well, I feel better for making a sound decision!

You don't sound like an addict at all.
If trazadone doesn't help, there are lots of meds out there for sleep that will. Have you tried any of them?

I slept well enough & w/o taking trazodone before bedtime. The ongoing problem though is never feeling like I get enough sleep. I usually feel mentally drained in the morning, which is how I felt after waking up today. I don't wake up excited & motivated. I truly wish that this wasn't the case! Believe me, it sucks to never feel well rested. Oh well.
Cheers! :)

I don't know about anyone else, but I will absolutely not take anything that makes me feel worse. I have no elbow room to play with. Depression is bad enough, I don't need something to nudge it just a little worse. Geez. There are a lot of better sleep meds than trazodone.

It could be the med. I believe trazodone metabolizes into another drug that does the opposite of what the original drug does.
This is from wikipedia, so its not necessarily reliable. I would do some research on your own about the metabolites of trazodone and ask your doctor. Here is the quote:
"Trazodone is well absorbed after oral administration with mean peak blood levels obtained at approximately 1 hour after ingestion. Absorption is somewhat delayed and enhanced by food. The mean blood elimination half-life is biphasic: the first phase's half-life is 3–6 hours, and the following phase's half-life is 5–9 hours. The drug is extensively metabolized with 3 or 4 major metabolites having been identified in the human body, some of which such as mCPP[17] may contribute to the side effect profile of trazodone. mCCP has been shown to activate numerous serotonin receptors, including 5ht2c. Due to the short half-life of trazodone, if a dose is taken at night, mCCP would be present in the body during the following day, causing symptoms such as anorexia (behavioral symptoms), ANXIETY, hypolocomotion, headache, and DEPRESSION. Approximately 70–75% of 14C-labelled trazodone was found to be excreted in the urine within 72 hours.[18] Trazodone is highly protein-bound."
I highlighted portions for emphasis. Hopefully you find something that helps without making you depressed.
This is the end of the thread.
