MAOIs and fish oil w/ anchovies?

Posted by adiaphora on July 3, 2009, at 18:28:42

Sorry if I have missed something in the numerous fish oil threads, but I can't seem to locate here or elsewhere any discussion of whether it is safe to take fish oil made from anchovies (usually forbidden for us tyramine-avoiders, I think) and sardines with an MAOI.

Does anyone have any experience with this?
And/or some insight into the fish oil production process and how it would make these little guys suddenly okay?

Thank you for your time.

Tyramine is derived from protein, and the process of producing fish oils removes all protein. There is no interaction potential with MAOIs, because the fish oil is an extract of the whole fish. I do not believe whole sardines should present a risk, in any case. Whole anchovies, or anchovy paste, I can understand a possible risk is involved, because they're air cured. But you don't have much of a dose there, unless you're rather atypical on the anchovy thing. Dose makes the poison. But we're not considering whole anchovies, so that's not an issue.

Sardine or anchovy oil is generally preferable to e.g. salmon or tuna oil, because they're lower on the food chain. Less potential for environmental contaminants, but those should be virtually eliminated by proper processing, anyway. And less impact on the ecosystem, too.

Mr. Hoover,
Sorry that it took me so long to get back after your kindly reply, but I am writing now to put it out there to anyone on Psycho-Babble who cares that the anchovy/mackerel-based fish oil is being taken by this Nardil-taker and that, while the fish are not so happy about it, I am.
Thanks again.
