Hi to all!
Is it O.K. to take aminos containing L-Tyrosine with an maoi?
I can never seem to get a straight answer on this.
Please advise.
Thanks,
CS

Hey,
The combo itself is contraindicated - tyrosine being the direct precursor to L-dopa, dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine. The risk to you is low in SMALL doses - you will find you actually only need (well most people do anyway) 100-300mg area, no more than twice a day. I currently take it in 100mg with nardil and find it still too much...I will lower to 50mg. Worst case scenerio, on a lose dose mind you, you will get mild blood pressure reaction...I have had one - includes mild headache, flushing, some additional body heat, heart hate increase, irritability. The supplement itself is not that great on maois...tends to make alot irritable. A better approach, if you are looking for that mild stimulution (that's what it gives by the way), is to take a good green tea with ginseng (a good one will have various forms of ginseng including extracts in it)...have one or two strong (bag steeped 15-20min in a smaller mug) per day. This contains many compounds including flavinoids, theanine and tons of things that gives the tyrosine stimulant effect but far less irritability and intenseness to it - much better feel. Increases dopamine and NE aswell (i'm convinced of this now after tons of study support). The tea is my preferred approach now. Don't overdue the stimulants on maois though (not to much consequetive day) as the neuros like to build up and get reduced slower on maois...will end up with effects that last into the next day and continue to build in intensity without a break. I've ordered also (not sure if it will be ok at the border) Mucuna pruriens - a plant with lots of stuff going on in it's seed extract, including L-dopa, can't wait to start...again a mild stimulatory addon for maois in low does that is more comfy than tyrosine. Get it easily in the USA.

Virtually any protein that you can imagine has tyrosine in it. It doesn't matter if it's lentil soup, a potato, or a pork chop, you're taking tyrosine. Whey or soy protein powders contain other aminos that compete for transport into the muscle or brain, so they also act like food.
If you're contemplating taking an isolated pure amino tyrosine supplement on an empty stomach, then you might find a mild reaction ensues because there are negligible concentrations of competing amino acids present, and you've taken a dose that exceeds the amount you'd normally get from food. From what you asked, I don't think that's what you're worried about, right?

I dont find a need for it really...other things will give the stimulation you would get from supplemental L-Tyrosine and are more comfy to take with the maoi.
