Curious about Abilify

Posted by jakeo29 on December 12, 2008, at 20:08:10

From the commercial on Television to the posts on this board I am currently interested if that small doses of Abilify may be a better treatment than Risperdone when combined with my Zoloft to help regulate my Dopamine system better. As it is supposed to turn down the dopamine in areas of the brain in my case related to anxiety and sleep disturbances and agonize dopamine in important wake-state, ADHD, and Motivational parts of the brain (D2 agonist). However, I like my Risperday because there are no side-effects. The side effects they list with Abilify sounds like I could die at anytime. (exaggerated i know). I tried Serequal(spelling) as an alternative to Risperdal in the hospital once, but I woke up and passed out (Cataplexy) so that did not do as I thought for helping the Narcolepsy during the night. I could still use much better improvement with motivation and organization from a neurological perspective, because the stimulants are becoming rather old.--shreww I am babbled out, I am surprised I posted these many messages in one sitting and not pooping out into my warm soft slumber device.

Bet your're so much younger than me. I've heard and read like you that it can be both stimulating and sedating. Maybe a small dose? 2.5mg? Phillipa

I'd say it depends on what you need to treat and what alternatives there are. I'm reading anxiety, sleep, ADHD in your post. I have bipolar disorder and anxiety.

Maybe you have more med options left than I have. My remaining selection is limited by drug interactions, contraindications, already tried and didn't work, etc.

I was afraid to try Abilify too, but my doctor suggested to try a small dose, as it's relatively fast acting, and probably not going to kill you within a week or two. So you can quickly see if it works, and then if it does, you can take some time deciding about the long term. I'm glad I tried it, because so far it is the only med that has worked for me.

And Philippa is right - some find it stimulating, some find it sedating. For me it's the latter, so I take it at night.

its a feeling of restlessness or need to move. very disturbing. usually not like rls.

abilify isn't that unsafe compared to other meds, it just frequently sucks more the other, cheaper meds that are as likely to be helpful. DA agonists have about the same evidence for depression as aripiprazole does, and cost a lot less.

Hi d/r,

My son was on 20mg per day Abilify, didn't take long for me to tell Doc's to get him the he*l off it. It scares me to think they'd probably be fine to watch him be a docile sweet paronoid child instead of some discomfort on our parts. Same happened with Risperdal. This from a well known facility. I found another psychiatrist (no bedside manner, who cares) and asked for the least mind-numbing anti/psych. We ended up with Seroquel 300mg day. He's a rapid cycler Bi-polar I, episodes were coming every 3 weeks for nine months until the Seroquel. Below 300mg he's headed for mania but havent had episode since last January, knock on wood. Thats all. Hope you are well. Goodnight.

Jade

PS-geuss what i've considered is 2mg? just very small amount. You say its safe?
