Ruh roh its anti-psychotic time

Posted by dbc on February 19, 2008, at 19:16:00

After doing well on lamictal i finally gave into the fact that an AP needed to be added because paranoia was getting the best of me. So now im in a seroquel induced stupor. Unfortunately, reading about it i've realized the weight gain/lethargy/possible diabetes link associated with this drug isnt for me. Not because of some simple aesthetic reason but because im allready seriously at risk to diabetes and am quite a fat man.

What im getting at is does anyone think its reasonable for me to ask for abilify in its place? Im never really maniac or hypomaniac i fit more into the mixed state category of crushing depression, irritability, anxiety, panic, generally freaking the hell out over minor things and of course paranoia.

Why did your pdoc pick seroquel? Maybe call him/her and discuss pros and cons and how long wants you on it and the other ap's and did your anxiety progress to paranoia? From anxiety? Phillipa.

Actually the lamictal addressed the anxiety the paranoia seems independent of it.

All of the mainstream benzos available in the US from valium to halcion to klonopin to xanax and beyond. They're really something i'd like to stop using and have pretty much.

Im on 100mg of lamictal but it pretty much killed my anxiety around 50mg.

100mg of Lamictal can definately be a mood stabilization dose. Some people with BP range disorders are on far more, but it is a good antidepressant for some as well.

Geodon would be a better choice as far as weight gain, although it very rarely causes heart arrythmias (reproven in a study to not do so) and can cause akathisia in some (which can be subdued by many agents).

I do think it's reasonable to suggest Abilify, although there may be some reasons that it's less appropriate for you. I think if I were feeling up to offering anyone any advice today, my advice would be to ask your doctor why he's suggesting Seroquel instead, and whether Abilify might be a better choice, based on your concerns about your health. (Those are valid concerns, and if I were facing that sort of situation with my own doctor, I'd certainly ask what he suggested to offset the risks involved. Then again, I'd be asking that to assess whether or not to fire my doctor...)

Abilify can cause some increased agitation, increased anxiety like symptoms for some people. That may be part of why your doctor didn't choose it for you. Then again, it could just be that he's got more experience with Seroquel, and so starts there out of habit. Asking why he's recommending the one might lead to a productive discussion with him.

Best luck to you.
