Adderall/Provigil and depression? Help!

Posted by clubfitter on December 3, 2007, at 20:25:40

I have read Adderall has been a miracle for some people and has worsened depression in others. What is the consensus? Got 15mg XR today for stimulation from fatigue and lethargy for depression. I originally got Provigil but then read the new FDA warnings about suicidal ideations. Should I take Adderall tomorrow?

In my experience it is good for pure MDD, but you better make sure your diagnosis is correct first. If you have a touch of bipolar or agitated depression, it can set off a manic episode. If you're sure you just have MDD and nothing leaning towards the other pole, then I say go for it. It can be a really good pick-me-up.

I got my doc to prescribe adderall for my mood and I was really looking forward to that first dose. I mean, people abuse it for the high. I wanted that. Authentic antidepressant or not, I just wanted to feel better. And I knew adderall would do that.

About an hour after dosing it I knew something was very wrong. I was really getting down in the dumps, felt like crying, fingers shaking, and wow was I feeling so much worse so fast. It took me by surprise. I had not even considered that might happen. Never crossed my mind. I was sure I would get a nice buzz. But instead I got way more depressed. Real deeply depressed.

Anyway, I knew it would only last a few hours. So I kept busy and hung on. Sure enough, as the drug faded, my mood bounced back to baseline and I was relieved.

Weird how adderall does that to me but ritalin doesn't. Ritalin feels pretty good. I am amazed how different these stimulants are.

Don't worry about the first dose. Worst case scenario is you feel a lot more depressed, you stay busy doing something for a few hours knowing it will pass pretty soon. And it does. Best case scenario, you will like it. Go fo rit.

I was on a combination of Adderall, celexa and wellbutrin for my depression. I think I also have ADD symptoms and that is why I tried adderall. It worked very well for me and I miss it now. It made me more organized, calmer and better able to focus.

I would recommend it highly and if you have a reaction like Blueberry did just follow his advice.

I would strongly recommend breaking the adderall into smaller pieces. Many many Doc's do not realize the effect initiating new meds can have. With stimulants, you have the real potential to crash and fly and feel all out of sorts if you're not careful with the dosing. The stimulant is suppose to help not make you flaked out.

After like 6 years or more of taking Adderall I still do not take the full prescribed dosage at one time. I still break my 20mg pills down into fourths and refuse to take anything larger than 5 mg's at one time. I refuse to go around having my moods swinging all over the place.

When I started on Adderall, I did take it as prescribed, and it was absolute hell. I seriously thought I would lose my mind (this was back in 2000 or so) and die from the experience. Initiate slow and low, especially with stimulants, the positive effects from them can be gained with small amounts.

And for pure Depression fighting power, I don't believe Adderall will do the job all by it's lonesome. Just my personal opinion.
