Can anyone who is on this explain to me what a mood stabalizer is? It seems as though many people taking Effexor are taking a mood stabalizer? What is it? What does it do? and how does it work?
Thanks for your support

Effexor is not a mood stabilizer it is an antidepressant. Antidepressants are used for unipolar disorder, where the only symptom is depresion. Mood stabilizers are used for bipolar disorder, where both mania, and depression are present.

mood-stabilizers are used to decrease both depression and (hypo)mania symptoms...they were originally used in Bipolar I, but are also used in bp II, schizophrenia/schizoaffective, and other disorders...
Some are stronger anti-manics (lithium, depakote). Some have antidepressant properties that are pronounced (lamictal). And some are neuroleptics (zyprexa, seroquel) that can handle depression, mania, and psychosis.

> aka wiresurgeLot of answers lot of possable confusion.First linkadge must not have read u correctly, you did not not say effexor was,but mentioned how mood stablizers are often used WITH it.
Honestly its a term created, and it is kinda in a lamon way exactly what its title says. Its meant to balance out moods, from either to amped or to depressed.
A majortiy of them are anti-convulsants,anti-seizure drugs since they have a calming effect on brain activity.
HOWEVER other drugs are used off label for the purpose of stablizing and well are in the pack and mentioned along with them.
Dont know how informed the link was,but without getting technical thats it ina nutshell. The middle of a see saw, pretty much.Im not even sure if its anything other than a name just created for what it does,no more.
This is the end of the thread.
