mood-stabilizers are used to decrease both depression and (hypo)mania symptoms...they were originally used in Bipolar I, but are also used in bp II, schizophrenia/schizoaffective, and other disorders...

Some are stronger anti-manics (lithium, depakote). Some have antidepressant properties that are pronounced (lamictal). And some are neuroleptics (zyprexa, seroquel) that can handle depression, mania, and psychosis.
