Benzo's can make you depressed, even Xanax

Posted by rjlockhart on July 22, 2006, at 22:02:29

From all my experiences with all, Except Valium, which i think would have the same effect.

Ativan, Klonopin(the worst), Xanax (ok sometimes)

Ativan i found is good day time drug when you are working, Xanax effects your work. Klonopin makes you druggy, at higher doses.

My advice to somebody with day time anxiety, Ativan 1mg-2mg for severe anxiety, or .5mg moderate anxiety.

Ativan didnt work for panic attacks, but anxiety for me.

You can just read this for maybe some knowlage. From my experience.

But i have realize i have been depressed on Xanax, and waiting for it to wear off, them im still depressed... ugh, i hate this. I have to take Energy drinks sometimes to even feel ok, l-tyrosine, not alcohol never. Smoking can and not help depression,i dont smoke hardly but when im very anxious it takes the edge off. I am going to nicotine gum.

Matt I disagree as valium is more depressing than xanax and xanax is somewhat nondepressing. Love Phillipa

yea i do agree i have heard that valium is depressing, i think if you depressed in the first place it can do the same. You know the guy who came OUT the chemist, said diazepam makes him a "bit depressed"

When Xanax came out in '81 it was pretty popular, but Valium was still, Valium was in movies, here need a valium? i have heard that so many times in 70's and 80's movies, like married to the mob, American Psycho (Xanax is mentioned, "she operates on many psychiatric drugs i belive tonight is Xanax)

Valium claimed the popularist benzo in time i think.

Anyways

Thats it.

Someone post something.

Matt

We realize we all have different chemistries (ie, we don't respond to the same medications in the same ways), and maybe there are different types, biochemically speaking, of anxieties also?

I use klonopin, which I find for me can be sedating at times, but not usually, and not really druggy-feeling at all. (At least not on my dose. Or maybe it depends on how long one has used it?) I found that the sedation factor is stronger if my stomache is empty. It helps me feel more peaceful at night, which is when I can really start freaking out over my life. But if I talk with friends or go do something- no one seems to be able to tell, and I feel "normal" as opposed to "druggy". I also found that it greatly relieved me from craving alcohol in social settings. The one benzo that I really didn't like was Restoril, because it felt like a bludgeon, a real knock-out, and not even in a comforting way. That one was honestly depressing for me.

My doc wont prescribe benzos to anyone for any reason. He believes they make depression worse and have no long term positive benefits. My experience with them is the same, they caused me more problems and I am glad I havent used them.

True Phillipa, xanax does indeed have antidepressant properties. I find especially at the lower doses, I have been on 1.5mg. for some time now and it really does help my mood. As far as long term benefits, you'll get differing opinions from many pdocs; however the one I saw was a world renowned psychopharmacologist and he endorses the use of benzodiazpines highly for people like me who have chronic GAD, social anxiety, and no drug seeking behavior, not escalating dosage for over 20 years. Oh and hardly any alcohol intake.
