You only need as much as your body requires. There are people (like NFL coach John Gruden) who sleep only 3-4 hours a night and feel fine.

Interesting about "CHUCKIE" - he's a damn good coach. I have read/heard that most of the great thinkers such as Einstein and Edison only needed 3-4 hrs. of sleep a night also. OUCH, i need/prefer 7 myself...guess i'm not in the "great thinker" catagory. :)

Depends on what really your body can handle. When i had bad insomnia, i was really irrtible, and not at all in the best mood the next day. But that was really caused from taking adderall at night and being warn out the next day....anyways that doesnt have anything much to what we are saying.
I take either Xanax, or Restoril when i cant sleep.
Ask your doctor maybe about Ambien CR, well if you have a job that you have to wake up at 4:45am in the morning like i do... not so good.
Sometimes i have realized that the body is more active when you have less sleep. I think it is its own defense mechanism, releasing norepheinerine. I am very alert soemtimes the next day, when i dont get alot of sleep. But it depends.
Take care

The quality of sleep is most important. You should only need 2-3 hours of REM4 sleep. Alcohol SEVEREly disrupts normal sleep patterns. You feel like you are out deeply, but excess alcohol inhibits necessary sleep function. I know from experience.

if your lack of sleep is affecting your job performace, then yes it is bad. Personally, I feel like I'm hung over with only 3-4 hours of sleep (even if I haven't been drinking). I'm slow and zoned out and probably only work at 50%-75% performance. I get more done at work in less time if I am adequately rested. I'm also in a bad mood (cranky). For me, the depression (bipolar) causes the poor sleep, but the poor sleep perpetuates the state.
