Hi,
just was wondering how these two anti-psychotics are different from each other? Is one more effective for depression? thanks so much for any info,

In reply to zyprexa versus seroquel?, posted by mogger on April 17, 2006, at 23:46:08
Scientific literature suggests that seroquel is better for depression. But as I found out, and others here also, is that seroquel was very depressing for me. I've tried it several times. Depression was dramatically worse beginning in 24 hours. Zyprexa I find much better, though I must admit that by itself it is not enough and can also be depressing. Zyprexa, or any antipsychotic for that matter, I think needs an antidepressant along with it for the synergistic action. Mileage varies a lot though. There will be others with experiences completely opposite of mine.

This is most prominently seen in recent literature. However, Zyprexa demonstrated antidepressant properties very early in its usage. In my experience, I found Zyprexa and Risperdal to be superior to Seroquel as an adjunct to antidepressants. I wonder sometimes if there isn't a bandwagon that investigators hop onto.
Right now I take Abilify. It is a much cleaner drug once you get past the first two weeks. Anxiety, restlessness, and insomnia are common startup side effects, but they usually disappear.
In defense of Seroquel, I will say that I know someone for whom it has a pronounced antidepressant effect when combined with Wellbutrin.

You might want to try Seroquel first, if for no other reason than to prevent the weight gain and risk of developing diabetes that sometimes accompany Zyprexa. Seroquel has the lowest risk of producing EPS (extrapyramidal symptoms) of all antipsychotics.
Most people find Seroquel to be more soporific (sleep-inducing) than Zyprexa. However, I believe this effect becomes less pronounced as the dosage is increased. I saw this with a friend of mine who currently takes 800mg of Seroquel.
Were you going to combine one of these drugs with an antidepressant? Is so, which one(s)?
