Not to be negative - but this study just says if you stay on a med for 8-12 weeks you MAY POSSIBLY achieve some sort of positive effect - and if not, we can try you on another....and then another.....and then another.
Check out my post about a study that just came out:
"Antidepressants fail to cure the symptoms of major depression in half of all patients with the disease even if they receive the best possible care, according to a definitive government study released yesterday."
So, in reality, the situation for patients is somewhat grim. The study finds that even under the BEST care that traditional AD's don't work or help.
When will the scientific community get over "Prozac Psychiatry?" IT DOESN'T WORK. Throwing drug after drug to those with depresion year after year until they finally have had a lifetime of horrific bouts of depression is torture and almost bordering on inhumane.
I'm 34 now. I was diagnosed with depression when I was 20. 14 years I have suffered and they STILL think SSRIs are a cure-all. Sorry, but it pisses me off. I only have one life - and to have to battle depression on a daily basis and try to make a life is nothing I would wish on anyone.
FASTRACK NEW TREATMENTS - BAN REAEARCH ON COPY-CAT SSRIs. THEY ALL ARE EQUAL IN EFFICACY!! Researchers and drug companies need to get some DA agnoists approved for depression. Meds that balance the HPA axis need to be approved for depression, opiates, meds like ketoconazole and metryapone (sp?) need to be available. And PSYCHIATRISTS NEED TO DO THEIR HOMEWORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
UGH I am so sick of this - it's 2006 but we haven't advanced much further than treatments that were available in the 50's for depression!!
CRUEL and UNUSUAL PUNISHMENT I say.
Rant.....sorry about that.
Jerry

When I heard this was hitting the major news, I was intrudged to see what it was all about. I don't think anything new or different was discovered. Augmentation, switching of meds and prolonged times of use have been offered and used as protocols for quite a while. From what I've surmissed, this has not made a great impact on a number of cases.
What I do understand, better than I would like, is the need all scopes of the medical community has for evidenced based practices. Basically, we can take new ideas or old ideas and do a study to prove or disprove or prove the level of effectiveness or ineffectiveness. In this case, I think it was just looking at current practices.
The study, to me, didn't shed any new light - unless a person had not been availed those ideas. I don't know any struggling persons who did not find relief after the failure of a first med trial that have not been offered those strategies...... maybe they are out there, but I don't know them.

I'm sorry the whole news pesentation wasn't on that clip. What they said in the whole thing was that 30% inmproveed with an antidepressant and that adding another antidepressant raised it to 50%. That is not high. And that you must work at getting over depression a pill cant do that. it requires work. Love phillipa

I think there is a huge need for better chemical interventions that work faaster and better for the severely depressed and those resistant to current treatment.
I feel like what's out there now is somewhat effective for the mild to moderately depressed. While it's a quality of life issue with risk of being a fatal disese for all who struggle, the folks who are incapable of making lifestyle and cognative and behavioral changes are the ones that really concern me. Folks who are rendered, by their depression, almost catatonic and so filled with thoughts of suicide, it's impossible to begin to get better without something that gets someone functioning at least on a basic level.
