I think there is a huge need for better chemical interventions that work faaster and better for the severely depressed and those resistant to current treatment.
I feel like what's out there now is somewhat effective for the mild to moderately depressed. While it's a quality of life issue with risk of being a fatal disese for all who struggle, the folks who are incapable of making lifestyle and cognative and behavioral changes are the ones that really concern me. Folks who are rendered, by their depression, almost catatonic and so filled with thoughts of suicide, it's impossible to begin to get better without something that gets someone functioning at least on a basic level.
